Prayut Chan-o-cha

Prime Minister General Prayut Chan-o-cha said he has rejected a proposal of the Tourism and Sports Ministry for government officials and state enterprise employees to take two days off in October to promote tourism.

Tourism and Sports Minister Phiphat Ratchakitprakan sent the proposal to the Cabinet for deliberation on Tuesday, saying it would promote tourism.

But Prayut said he rejected the proposal out of concern that critics were finding fault with his government.

“There are those finding fault with the government all the time these days,” Prayut sasid.

Besides, Prayut said, the government has already approved a measure to boost tourism by subsiding Bt1,000 of the travel costs for each citizen touring in the country. To be eligible for the subsidy, Thais must register for an e-wallet with the government and the Bt1,000 in the e-wallet must be used in certain shops taking part in the government programme.

Prayut said he was fed up with critics who also attacked the e-wallet measure for boosting tourism.

He added that he was happy to see that the tourism situation during the first eight months of this year was better than last year. He said the next four months will be a high season for foreign tourists and the government expects some 40 million foreign tourists will visit the kingdom.

The prime minister said tourism has already generated Bt2 trillion revenue from January to August, an increase of 3.27 per cent compared to last year. A total of 26.5 million foreign tourists visited the kingdom during the period, an increase of 2.61 per cent.

Spending by foreign tourists generated revenue of Bt1.29 trillion, a growth of 3.04 per cent. Chinese, Malaysians, Indonesians, South Koreans and Laotians were the top five groups of foreign tourists during the period.

One of the few reasonable decisions this man has made. Credit where credit is due.

Not really because he canned the recommendation for the wrong reason, that being his dread of criticism which he admits is making him "fed up".

He should have rejected it because it was stupid idea but he didn't do that, nor could he even admit that it was stupid.

He rejected it out of concern that critics were finding fault with his government; which they surely would have given it was a totally hairbrained idea dished up by a Minister who is proving himself to be a complete fool.

1. Nowhere in the article as translated does it actually make any case for how giving a bunch of lazy civil servants extra days off would do anything to expand tourism here.

2. Another dead on arrival proposal from the Tourism Ministry, following hard on their heels of their keep the bars open until 4 am in tourism areas proposal that also appears to be going nowhere. Not off to a very auspicious start for the new minister.

Common sense prevailing for a change, civil servants only work mon-fri,while

most of the working population have to work 6 day weeks, notwithstanding,

it would have inconvenienced a lot of other people.

You think civi servants only work Mon - Fri...? Officially yes, but  lot put in may more hours than that. My wife works at least 12 hours a day in office and also at home. And when there ARE extra holidays....she uses them for meetings! I asked her why - she said there is not enough time in the week to have meetings during the week. Last weeked she was at work both Saturday and Sunday in meetings. Look at immigration; they are open well beyond office hours many days. Not all civic servants do this, as it depends on their position, but it's wrong to think all civil servants work 8am-4pm weekdays.

1.  Stop all the double pricing of foreigners when entering  parks and attractions and charge the same price as Thais pay.

2.  Double the Amount one can bring in duty free/

3. Reduce the tax on alcoholic drinks by 25%

4.  Reduce the tax on Hotels by 30%

5.  Stop harrasing tourists who enter the country.
