The getting old curse – How are you dealing with it?

One day, two older fellas were talking…

OF1: “So, it's your special day today, Harry! Got any big plans?”

OF2: “Huh? Whadaya talkin’ about, Leo? What special day??”

Leo: “You forgot, eh? Today’s your 80th birthday, Buddy!!”

Harry: “Geez, Leo, you know you’re right… guess I did forget. But, anyway, no. No special plans for me. To me, today is just like any other day: around 6:30pm, I’ll take a shower. Then, at 7:00, I’ll have something to eat. At 7:30, I’ll watch the news. And, then about 8:00, I’ll hit the sack… just like every other day. But… why are you asking?”

Leo: “Oh, I dunno. I just have a feeling you’re gonna have a really great birthday this year, pal.”

Harry: “Hold it right there, mister. Now, don’t you go planning anything wild or weird just ‘cause it’s my birthday, ok?!”

Leo: “Ok, ok, never mind old friend. Just enjoy your special day, alright?”

That evening, at 7:00, there’s a knock on the front door. Harry (makes his way to a standing position and) ambles over to the door; he opens it. Standing before him, is a beautiful, buxom, blonde, 6-ft. tall (Amazon!) lady of the evening.

bbbLady: “Hellllllllloooooo…(throaty voice, smiling broadly)”

Harry (looking up, warily): “Could I help you, Miss?”

bbbLady: “Wellllllllll… are you Mr. Harry? (smiling wider now)”

Harry: “Yessss (still looking up, warily), that’s me, I’m Harry. Why are you asking?”

bbbLady: “Wellllllllll… Mr. Leo sent me. And, he told me to offer you super sex...”

(pause)

Harry: “Ok, I’ll have the soup.”

I had rotator cuff injuries to both shoulders - fell off a ladder onto a concrete floor, landing on my shoulder to avoid hitting my head.  The next day, while I relaxed in a hammock, it broke (!) and I fell onto a concrete floor on my other shoulder.....

Both shoulder injuries were painful and limited my physical movement.

Rather than surgical treatment, I began to exercise and to GENTLY stretch my shoulders through careful exercise.

Today. several years later, I have zero pain from either old injury.  My range of shoulder movement is about 95% of the norm and I'm aware of what exercises NOT to do which would overstretch those old injuries.

The point being - IMHO, thinking you are too old to exercise or because you have previous injuries is absolutely the wrong attitude to take.  Ignore those who tell you to 'take it easy'.  Get out of the house, walk gently, move your arms (gently), slowly bring your body back to the state it was in your 30's and 40's.  It can be done, it won't happen overnight, it shouldn't require surgery or expensive medications.

It DOES require a positive outlook ????

For years my sore knees inhibited any desire to exercise. A Thai Dr diagnosed gout and since then I've been far more active as the pain has gone. The western Drs I saw about them didn't even consider gout.

The point is that one might not want to exercise or be active because of an undiagnosed medical condition.

Always worth trying a different Dr.

There is an expresion "Hope for the best but prepare for the worst"   and  “Ninety-nine percent of the failures come from people who have the habit of making excuses.” ―George Washington Carver

If you have pain or sickness you find out the cause and have it treated. Can exercise around painfull knee joints by doing uper body workouts.---there is alwas a way.  Bad past decisions/choices account for present conditions.

Seems from your posts that all/many of your marriages relationships ended badly with you losing a lot financially. We can't account for the actions of those we chose to live with but should plan ahead if things might go bad , seems like you were one of the many that said  "my girls different"  I am legally married to my Thai wife and we own properties in different areas of Thailand and I have tried to account for situations if they go bad but even if she manged to keep all the properties and kick me out with out me getting my 50% I don't care because my Gov (not SS) pension goes to me and I can live on that alone quite well. If we have amical breakup then she would get life insurance and 70% of my pension, if not she gets nothing but the properties she screwed me out of. Never give anyone the ability to hurt you. Too late for you now but bad choices  lead to bad results.

If we never gave anyone the ability to hurt us we'd never have a relationship, we'd never have friends, we'd never love our families.

Knowing other people always gives them the opportunity to hurt us.

The people that hurt me the most were the ones that I trusted, my friends, my family, my partners.

Too late for me? Yes.

I can protect myself, but it means I can't trust any other person in the world.

If I open myself up to another person, it automatically gives them the opportunity to hurt me.

I don't want to live like that.

Is it better to love and be hurt than never love at all?

I was only married once, but had another relationship as well.

I just chose bad people, or good people that went bad, to be involved with. Hardly a lot.

Like they say, <deleted> happens.

That's Dennis Quaid with his 26 year old girl friend taken on the beach a few days ago. You guys say nothing can be done about getting old  but exercise proper diet and nutrion can do wonders as well as some suppliments HGH or testosterone boosters and young attitude and GF.

That's certainly true but you ,ThaiBeachLover , and others seem to infer that being out of shape (conditioning) weak, fat, can't exercise (because of past injuries) is just a natural result of age---getting old. I and others say that aging is ineveitable but can be slowed and the quality of your older age  (baring serious illness) can be much better maybe longer with slight changers in diet/nutrition , proper exercise/training and some suppliments. Simon43 and I told you your rotator cuff injuries could be aliviated with proper exercise diet training he and I have done it without surgeries. Working around knee joint or other stiffines can be done but you have to have the will determination to start and keep it up. In the article above with the Geatful Dead guy Bob Weir they state once old you need to keep working out---if you stop it is incredibly hard to start again. I had been active all my life but came over here figured i'm retired did nothing got fat had a heart attcack. Got back into training after recovering and not going to let myself get like that again. Plus I like the feeling of strenth/power I got back. Just before the heart attack I could not life my 44kilo wife when she collapased once. Now I can carry her up 2 flights of stairs.

Hey a lot of guys don't like or want to exercise , well when your younger your body basically can repair itself when older it needs help to maintain muscle , speed, endurance. Like they say "use it or lose it"don't stress uses the muscles they atrophy, you get weaker, immune system becomes comprimised and you age faster.

Like they say "use it or lose it"

This ^^^

When I was about 58 years old, fat and on a bad diet, I decided that if I didn't sort things out before I hit 60, then it would be a lot harder to get fit after that age.  Sure, you can do this at any age, if you really want to.

Sadly, for many (MANY), they are weak-willed, lazy and selfish, (human traits that I consider to be the norm).  If you want to sort out your health and diet, then you need to take action, not put things off for another day.  You need to start today and continue tomorrow and the day after that and ......

Changes don't happen overnight.  It took me a couple of years to slowly increase my fitness level and to slowly change my diet.  Having achieved a reasonable fitness and health level, I now feel good and look (reasonably!) good as I close in on 61 years old. A 4 Km jog most mornings, another 4 Km walk in the day, chin-ups, pull-ups, planks etc, salad, fruit, muesli, a glass of cider to end the day, and minimal stress.

It works for me - it could also work for you if you ignore those who tell you to slow down in your twilight years.

Sylvester Stallone is showing just how ripped he actually is at age 73...but showing us the comparison between him now and at the age of 35.

Sly shared a photo today, of himself inside the gym lifting weights. But, he posted the picture including an old one of the exact same pose next to it...when he was only 35 years old.

Stallone is similar to his pal Arnold Schwarzenegger who can be found on any given day inside of a Gold's Gym in Los Angeles. Arnold has even started to help train his son with weightlifting.

To be honest, Sly's entire family is in great shape, so it could just be genetics!

Genetics, socialisation and both men are exceptions, and have been able to dedicate a fair amount of their life to working out from a very early age.

I am not detracting from their fitness, just saying they have had a different lifelong attitude to fitness and earned money (large amounts) from their fitness.

They are not exceptions , they are exceptional. Most of the steriotypical Pattaya Beer Bar  patrons  look like they have never exercised in their lives or are big guys who maybe played rugby but after quiting let it all go to fat. Most of us  don't have the time or money to exercise in a gym like actors//pro bodybuilders but as retired guys you can train the way they do (trainer/ foods/suppliments avilable online) don't have to train the hours they do but can do enough to make serious change in your body and health. For those that cry I'm too old watch the 1st vid below . Lady started traing at 71---she's 80 now.

Reason Iposted 2 lady vids is that they have far less testosterone than we but still can change their bodiesdrastically and get strong. You simply need the determinationto stsrt and keep it up. In previous posts i gave examples of how to start and workaround limitations. Lady below started training at 46 became a pro at 53 and won. Is now 65.

Older bodies need exercise , good nutrition proper training to avoid injuries and get strong or sit on a PC keyboard all day long and complain about how life sucks. No amount of suppliments, HGH, Testosterone boosters or even steroids are going to pump up your body if you don't workout. Can't just take a pill/shot and think any change will occur.

At my age I can't be <deleted> making the effort to look good. No young woman is going to want me no matter how ripped I look as my wallet doesn't bulge, and I have zero interest in women look like my old granny, for fun.

Plenty of far more enjoyable things to do in life than work out, like sleeping in, watching an enjoyable movie, or babbling on TVF.

Some of my favorite quotes about aging:

There is a fountain of youth. It is your mind, your talents, the creativity you bring to your life and the lives of the people you love. When you learn to tap this source of inspiration, you will truly have defeated age.

From one of the most spectacular older (and younger!) women in history. Sophia Loren.

Age is an issue of mind over matter. If you don't mind, it doesn't matter. Mark Twain

Of all the self-fulfilling prophecies in our culture, the assumption that aging means decline and poor health, if probably the deadliest of them all. Marilyn Ferguson

The trouble is when a number, your age, becomes your identity, you have given away the power to choose your future. Richard J. Leider

Anyone who stops learning is old, whether at 20 or 80. Anyone who keeps learning stays young. The greatest thing in life is to keep your mind young. Henry Ford

Count your age by friends, not years. Count your life by smiles, not tears. John Lennon

I stay away from natural foods. At my age I need all the preservatives I can get. George Burns

I just don't think of age and time in respect of years. I just have too much experience of people in the 70's who are vigorous and useful, and people in their 30's that are lousy, in bad physical shape, and can't think straight. I don't think age has that much to do with it. Harrison Ford

This is what you see when you are young. Everything seems so close. That is the future. And that is what you see when you are old. Everything seems really far away. That is the past. Unknown

Do not go gently into that good night. Old age should burn and rave at the close of day. Rage, rage against the dying of the light. Dylan Thomas

What am I the most afraid of? That because the last thing in the world I want to do is tweet, or update my Facebook status, the soul of youth will vomit me into the cesspool of the old and the worthless. Unknown

It's not about why she is with him it's that he looks 15---20 years younger than he is and is very fit , strong , vibrant. Out surfing rather than sitting at home watching tv or babling on a PC. Didn't get a body like that at 65 from taking it easy, eating junk or not working out.

And if you read my post #397 it's not about working out to  look young. The Greatful Dead band member has grey hair and beard (looks his age  of 72) but is very phyiscaly fit as he has worked out all his life

Some of us have naturally prominent veins, and have only ever worked out naturally, they carry a greater volume to feed the muscle mass

You ever pumped iron? When I was younger in the Army they had trouble finding my veins to take blood. I was a runner in school but didn't realy work out my arms. After pumping weights to build up strenth there is no problem to find veins now. They will swell with exertion/exercise to supply more blood/oxygen to the muscles. Try curling a dumbel for a few mins and youwill see them enlarge in just a few mins. Over time continuous exercise will enlarge them quite a bit.

If you wish to continue thinking that beautiful young girls go with old men for their muscles, carry on living in Lala land. However, she could have a daddy obsession, which would explain it.

I'd rather take it easy, eat junk food (it's delicious ) and I really can't be bothered with working out. If I was rich enough to have beautiful young groupies wanting to check out my bulge ( in my wallet ), I'd probably think differently.

BTW, even though I'm a geriatric, I still dig loads of dirt on the farm, but it does take longer than it would have at 20.

It's not being dead that's the worry, it's the dying.
