PHUKET(NNT) - The Thailand Convention and Exhibition Bureau (TCEB) has been holding discussions with the business sector in Phuket in an effort to position the province as a MICE World Class City, and making it the marine hub MICE City of Asia.

TCEB President Chiruit Isarangkun Na Ayuthaya, has revealed that the bureau has integrated cooperation between government agencies, private firms, and communities in Phuket province in an effort to position the province as a MICE World Class City, by using four strategies, namely targeted MICE marketing and public relations, a MICE products and services upgrade with the participation of local communities to create opportunities and distribute wealth, inhancement of human resource capabilities to support the MICE industry, and the development of infrastructure to drive the MICE market.

TCEB’s data suggests Phuket has great potential as a MICE city to host international conventions due to its high development indicators. Transport infrastructure in Phuket has continued to be developed, including the expansion of the international airport, to increase passenger capacity from 12.5 million to 18 million passengers annually, with flights operating to and from destinations in East Asia, the Middle East, and Europe.

The province also has 14 cruise ship docks, four marinas, and a plan to construct a light rail system from the airport to the city center. Phuket province currently has 220 venues able to host meetings and seminars, some 40,000 accommodation units, and is known for its cultural diversity and many community learning centers.

Thai and international MICE travelers visiting Phuket in 2018 numbered 2,216,230 person showing a 167.94 percent growth on the figure in 2017, generating revemue of 19.544 billion baht which was 87.75 percent higher than in the previous year. TCEB this year expects to see the number of MICE visitors exceed 34,662,000 persons, generating some 121 billion baht. These targets however may change according to the global economic situation.

Yeah, let's use an industry specific acronym and not explain its meaning. I clicked just to find out what it meant and I still had to Wiki it. Just to put a gloss on beechbum's comment:

"It is a niche area of tourism that is focused around the planning and booking of groups for large events, conferences or seminars."
