BANGKOK, Sept. 17 (Xinhua) -- Thailand on Tuesday urged Cambodia to see to it that Cambodian migrant workers seeking jobs in Thailand are officially documented in the first place.

During a meeting in Siem Reap between Thailand's Labor Minister M.R. Chatumongkol Sonakul and Cambodia's Labor and Vocational Training Minister Ith Samheng, the Thai side demanded that all Cambodian workers seeking jobs in Thailand be officially documented by Cambodian authorities.

Thailand provides One Stop Service for migrant workers from its neighboring states, including Myanmar, Laos and Cambodia, who have intended to work legally in this country.

Of a total of about 2 million Cambodians currently working in Thailand, no less than one-fifth was believed to be undocumented and illegally employed.

The Thai labor minister gave assurances to his Cambodian counterpart that all Cambodian migrant workers in Thailand will have their work permit extended on condition that they be officially documented by Cambodian authorities in the first place.

He confirmed that all documented Cambodian migrant workers are entitled welfare benefits and will be protected by Thai authorities from being victimized by human traffickers.
