Canada's Trudeau apologies for dressing up in brown face, election chances could suffer

OTTAWA (Reuters) - Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau apologised on Wednesday for wearing brown face make-up in 2001 after an embarrassing picture emerged less than five weeks before an election in which he faces a tough fight.

The image of a 29-year-old Trudeau with his face in dark make-up is a major challenge for a leader who often speaks about the need to fight racial discrimination and who has three prominent ministers of Indian descent in his cabinet.

"I should have known better then, but I didn't and I did it and I'm deeply sorry," Trudeau, 47, told reporters on his campaign plane in Halifax, Nova Scotia, after Time magazine published the image.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau apologizes for wearing brown face make-up in 2001 after an embarrassing picture emerged less than five weeks before an election in which he faces a tough fight. Ryan Brooks reports.

Time said the image was provided by Vancouver businessman Michael Adamson earlier this month. Adamson was part of the West Point Grey Academy community where Trudeau, then 29, worked at the time, the magazine said. The picture was in the Vancouver private school's yearbook.

"I dressed up in an Aladdin costume and put make-up on. I shouldn't have done it," a grim-faced Trudeau said in comments carried live on Canadian television.

The picture shows him wearing a turban and a white robe, with his face covered in dark makeup.

"This picture runs completely contrary to the image of tolerance the prime minister has so scrupulously cultivated. It can’t be good for him or his party," said Darrell Bricker, chief executive officer of polling firm Ipsos Public Affairs.

Canada has an official policy of multiculturalism and about one in five Canadians were born overseas, according to Statistics Canada.

NECK-AND-NECK

Donning dark make-up is particularly sensitive in the United States, given its long history of slavery. In February, Virginia Governor Ralph Northam resisted calls to step down over a racist photo in his 1984 medical school yearbook.

Trudeau, questioned by reporters, also admitted he had dressed up in make-up when at high school and performed "Day O", a traditional Jamaican song about people loading bananas onto boats.

Trudeau is locked in a neck-and-neck battle with Conservative leader Andrew Scheer ahead of the Oct. 21 federal election.

Scheer said he was "extremely shocked and disappointed" by the photo.

"Wearing brown face is an act of open mockery and racism. What Canadians saw this evening is someone with a complete lack of judgment and integrity and someone who's not fit to govern this country," he told reporters in Quebec.

Trudeau has seen his once sky-high popularity hurt by a series of missteps, including a ruling last month by a top watchdog that he had breached ethics rules by pressuring the former justice minister to ensure a major construction firm avoid a corruption trial.

Trudeau brushed off suggestions he might quit.

"I am going to be asking Canadians to forgive me for what I did ... it was a dumb thing to do. I'm disappointed in myself. I'm pissed off with myself for having done it," he said.

The ruling Liberals are competing for left-of-centre votes with the New Democrats of Jagmeet Singh, a practising Sikh, who is the first person from ethnic minority descent to lead a major party in Canada.

"The people who see this image are going to think about all the times in their life that they were made fun of, that they were hurt, that they were hit, that they were insulted, that they were made to feel less because of who they are," a visibly upset Singh told reporters.

I know in this day and age its really important not to upset people, but what sort of over sensitive a**se gets offended by something like this. Truly unbelievble that this sort of <deleted> gets into a newspaper and becomes something that can bring an end to a political career.

I don't see anything wrong with costumes at parties. I think the whole blackface outrage is entirely made up from white guilt mentality and is total nonsense in this day and age.

That being said, it couldn't have happened to anyone better. Let the left eat the left. Good riddance Prince Ali. Too bad you showed up at all.

Not a coincidence this photo surfaced in the middle of an election campaign.

Very grubby tactics.

If an Indian painted his face white and wore a mounty uniform the media would be silent.

How many Canadians are in the Indian gov in Delhi.

NONE.

Maybe Indians are the real racists.

I love it when a Liberal gets 'hoisted by his own petard'

It really wouldn't have been an issue had he not taken on this mantle of being so sanctimonious and politically correct all the time

His dressing up shouldn't automatically be assumed to be 'racist'.. just an error of judgement. So maybe liberals like him should stop and think before being quick to point the finger at other people's indiscretions

The issue isn't that he wore the "black face" - it's that he's a lying hypocrite that will say anything to get elected (or re-elected).

And when he gets caught, he tried to brush it off like he thinks the rules don't apply to him any ways.

Like when he kicked one person out of his party and suspended another (and demoted a third) when they were accused of sexual harassment, but when it turns out that he groped a female reporter (who wrote an article about right after it happened) he decides (20 years later) that "she must have mis-remembered it" and that was it. Not even an apology after that one. The only thing he was apparently sorry about (at the time he groped the woman) was that he didn't realize she was a "national" reporter. He thought she was from some little hick town "once a week" local paper. He even said it (at the time) that he wouldn't have been so "forward" if he'd known (that she wrote for a national media outlet).
Apparently he thought she was some minor league local that would swoon over him (and who knows what afterwards).

Or like how he attends a "pay for access" dinner with a group of businessmen. One of them is trying to set up a new bank and needs government approval. Another one is apparently so impressed with Trudeau that he decides to make a million dollar donation to Trudeau's Family Trust (which is what Trudeau and his brothers had been living off of for decades).

Anywhere else (in the Western world at least) and that would have been called a bribe (or a payoff if the decision had already been made). Trudeau's hand-picked Ethics Commissioner never even blinked an eye. Trudeau himself claimed that the donation wouldn't influence his decision (the bank was approved of course).

The Ethics Commissioner, whose job solely depends on the whim of the Prime Minister, did find Trudeau guilty for failing to report the trip he made (on a private helicopter to the private island owned by the Aga Khan, a billionaire with numerous "charities" in Canada, many of which receive money from the government).

I think he got a whopping $100 fine for that.
(He's the only Canadian Prime Minister to ever be found guilty of violating the Ethics Laws - and he's done it twice now ! At least !)

Trudeau's Finance Minister (Bill Morneau) also got a whopping $100 fine after the Ethics Commissioner "investigated" him following reports that he (and his father) sold off a large quantity of stock in a company they own, a week before the Finance Minister tabled a budget that cause the value of that company's stock to drop. Apparently they saved themselves from taking some huge losses and then of course were able to buy back the stock at a much lower cost.

Any where else and that would have been called "insider trading" and people would have been arrested and faced prison.

(I'm guessing it's just a coincidence that the newest RCMP commissioner also happens to be Bill Morneau's cousin.)

And as expats overseas you should know that Trudeau has your back ! Unless you are non-Muslim and being held by Muslim terrorists, in which case you can kiss your @55 good-bye as he won't lift a finger to help you.

Like the 2 guys who were being held in the Philippines when Trudeau was elected. The ONLY effort he made was to send a disgraced former (Liberal) party leader to the homes of the families of the guys being held, to council them on how to deal with the kidnappers.
After the 2 were murdered Trudeau did manage to send out a short tweet expressing his "outrage" (probably over the fact that he had to interrupt the THIRD "Cabinet Retreat" he was on - at a swanky resort being paid for by the taxpayers - in the first year of his government).

And when 6 Canadians were murdered in Burkina Faso (by Muslim terrorists) what did he do ? He went to a local mosque "to pray" - despite the fact the 6 people who died were all Christians. "Praying" my @55. More likely assuring certain parties that no retaliation would happen. And nothing did happen of course, even after another couple Canadians were killed in the same country later on.

But you should have heard Trudeau rant and rave in Parliament before the last election, when an immigrant Egyptian who had a Canadian passport was sentenced to a 3 year prison term in his native Egypt (for anti-government activities). Trudeau was raging that the government was failing to protect the guy and that they should be doing this and that and the other thing when it came to trying to free him. Sheesh, about the only thing he didn't do was demand that we invade Egypt to free the guy !
(Fahmi had actually thanked the Conservatives for all they were doing for him. He was eventually freed after he agreed to give up his Egyptian citizenship. Of course, once he was safely back in Canada though he slammed the government for "not doing enough" and immediately started trying to get his Egyptian citizenship back. Because, you know, he loves Canada so much.)

I searched and searched and couldn't find ANYTHING where Trudeau made ANY effort to try and free Ridsdel and Hall when they were being held in the Philippines though. Funny how riled up Trudeau got when it was a Muslim facing a 3 year prison sentence, and how quiet he was when it was 2 (non-Muslims) facing death at the hands of (Muslim) terrorists. Trudeau even had a military option available (involving the Philippines military and maybe Canadian JTF personnel) but he wouldn't approve it.

But he did make it a priority to make an out-of-court settlement with a convicted terrorist. A terrorist who came from a family of terrorists that have a history with the Liberal party. Omar Khadr's father was a senior Al Qaeda "financier" and used "charities" he set up in Canada to funnel money to the terrorists. When he was being held in a Pakistani prison for his role in an embassy bombing in that country, Liberal Prime Minister Chretien personally intervened on his behalf and got him freed.
Omar's father was so grateful that, right after he got back to Canada, he packed up his family and moved them to Afghanistan where he continued to raise money for Al Quaeda right up until the Americans invaded after 9/11.
At one point he was living in the same compound as bin Laden's family. When Omar's sister (Zaynab) was having her 2nd wedding, Osama bin Laden was one of the guests of honour. The other guest of honour was Ayman al-Zawahiri, Osama's #2 man in Al Queda. (Zaynab's 2nd husband was also a terrorist. This time from Tunisia.)

NO court had ordered Canada to pay Omar Khadr anything. Trudeau claimed he made the (secret) settlement to "save money" but it is more likely that they got wind that Khadr was going to lose the case and Trudeau wanted to make sure he didn't walk away empty handed. Trudeau was apparently quite <deleted> that his "secret" agreement was leaked. He DIDN'T want us to know about it at all !

From the same Trudeau that promised his government would be more open and honest than what he claimed the Conservatives were.

Note: Zaynab's first marriage was to an Egyptian terrorist who just happened to be the guy that actually did the embassy bombing in Pakistan. Zaynab's third marriage was to none other than Joshua Boyle. The guy who claimed he took his very pregnant (second) wife "backpacking" in the mountains of Afghanistan, during the war. It was all a lie of course. He went to connect with the same terrorists his ex-wife (Zaynab) used to praise so highly. After 9/11, Zaynab spent the next 5 years hiding out with the Taliban and called those the "best years of her life". She, and her mother, did little things to help out the terrorists, like giving them their passports and then (eventually) claiming they were "lost" and applying for new ones. They actually had their passports cancelled at one point because of the number of times they'd supposedly "lost" them.
Josh Boyle had converted to Islam shortly before meeting Zaynab. Their marriage didn't last long but like many converts, Boyle wanted to prove that he "belonged" to his new religion.
He set up the backpacking trip to disguise his true intentions and then set up his disappearance by sending out an email claiming to already be in a "very dangerous part of the country" - while he was still in Kabul. They went to great lengths to disguise where they were being held so that rescuers would be looking in the wrong place (they continually tried to make it seem like they were in Afghanistan but Boyle's wife admitted they had been in Pakistan almost the whole time).

And their "kidnappers" NEVER made a single ransom demand for them the entire time. Strange don't you think ?

Of course, as soon as one of his kids got sick, they had to arrange to be "rescued" so they could get back to Canada and the great healthcare system. (I had predicted years ago that he would be "rescued"if he ever got sick or injured, or disillusioned with his new friends. I also thought his wife would sing a very different tune once she was safely away from him and she did, though she hasn't admitted to the kidnapping being a hoax - yet.)

By faking his kidnapping, he gets treated as a victim when he returns instead of a terrorist sympathizer that he really is. (Note: Boyle's story about why he was in Afghanistan has changed at least 3 times and he's currently facing criminal charges for abuse. He also lied about how they were "rescued" and tried to blame the abuse (of his wife) on the terrorists who were so angry about that that they released a statement basically calling Boyle a liar !)
Of course the main terrorist sympathizer himself had to bring Boyle to Parliament for a photo op. Probably regretted doing that soon after when Boyle's daughter was taken to a hospital ER, followed shortly afterwards by his wife. Didn't take the doctors long to figure out she'd been abused - for a long time.

This is the same Trudeau that not only REFUSES to arrest KNOWN ISIS terrorists that have made it back to Canada, but is also bringing in a crime bill that reduces the crime of being a terrorist to a "summary conviction" instead of the Indictable Offence it currently is. That means a judge can hand out the same sentence to a known terrorist as he would to someone convicted of littering or graffiti. Assuming the person is charged within 6 months or the charges would be dropped.
Currently, belonging to a designated terrorist group (like Al Qaeda or the Taliban), leaving the country to join a terrorist group, or providing support (material or financial) to a terrorist group is an Indictable Offense that carries a prison term of 5-10 years along with a criminal record and your fingerprints on file.

Trudeau's Bill will change it so that a judge can decide to reduce those charges to "Summary Convictions". Summary Convictions don't require the convicted person to submit their fingerprints, no criminal record and they could get no jail time at all.

Assuming they are charged within 6 months of committing the offense(s) of course. Otherwise they can't be charged at all !

The same Trudeau who also made it a priority to restore Canadian Citizenship to a CONVICTED terrorist who had planned a mass murder of Canadians in Toronto. After he was convicted and sent to prison, the Conservatives passed a law allowing them to strip the citizenship from people like him.Trudeau restored that citizenship within weeks of being elected.

After all, in Trudeau's own words (true quote) "Immigrants make "better" Canadians". Nothing like a slap in the face to all of us who were born and raised in the Canada (and fought for it - something no Trudeau has ever done).

Under Trudeau, Canada has (unofficially) become the first Western country to be a "state sponsor" of terrorism.

So it should come as NO surprise if he just shrugs this latest scandal off, like he's been trying to do with SNC scandal.

I wonder how much that would blow up even more if people knew who the majority shareholders of SNC Lavalin were (rumour has it that it is a former Liberal Prime Minister and his family, who own just enough that their names don't have to be publicly disclosed but combined they own the controlling interest in the company).

And that just barely scratches the surface.
Remember how he claimed that "rich families like his" shouldn't get publicly funded daycare ? And then used his (publicly funded) household budget to hire 2 nannies for his kids.

Remember how he tried to make an "official" position for his wife so she could get a (publicly funded) office and salary as the poor woman was forced to answer "official" correspondence on a coffee table - in one of the 22 rooms of the "cottage" they were living in (in the Governor General's residence).

Remember how he promised they'd run "modest" $10 BILLION deficits for the first 3 years to "jump start" the economy but the budget would (magically) "balance itself" in the 4th year (coincidentally right before the next election).
Remember how, within weeks of taking over, they suddenly announced that it would actually be $30 BILLION dollar deficits. They claimed they had an economic study that showed they had to do that, but then refused to show that study (because they were lying from the beginning and never planned on running $10 billion deficits but knew they'd never get elected if they told the truth). (Makes you wonder when they ever plan on actually running a "more open and honest" government.)

A couple months ago the Liberals were apparently celebrating because they'd calculated that they'd be able to balance the budget - by 2040 !! They were apparently celebrating because they had thought they wouldn't be able to do it until 2045 !

The SAME people who claimed that the budget would "balance itself" in their 4th year !

In fact, just last week it was announced that the Liberals are $14 BILLION in deficit in this fiscal year already and we aren't even halfway through it yet ! And this is the year the budget was supposed to (magically) balance itself.

Funny how Trudeau is soooo keen on pushing another pipeline through BC to the Pacific, but dead set against one going to the East. Almost as though he takes his orders directly from Irving Oil (who own a very large fleet of tankers that haul all the oil going to Eastern Canada, from a variety of third world oil producing countries. I believe they own some refineries on the East Coast as well). Any pipeline bringing Alberta oil to the East would put and end to their monopoly.

(It would also reduce the tanker traffic on the Eastern Seaboard - funny how you never hear anyone protesting all those tankers though - almost like it's all deliberately staged.)

Then there's the whole Davies shipyard/Adm Norman scandal which, again, Trudeau's government got caught trying to rig a deal and are refusing to release the documents that would clear Adm Norman because releasing those docs would (probably) expose more Liberal corruption.

So yeah, something like Trudeau appearing in blackface years ago ? Meh - hardly even worth his time to acknowledge it and the rules don't apply to him anyways (or so it would appear).

Almost as though he takes his orders directly from Irving Oil (who own a very large fleet of tankers that haul all the oil going to Eastern Canada, from a variety of third world oil producing countries as well as refineries on the East Coast).

Don't know how long it took you to write that but it took me 15 seconds to scroll down it.

This also reminds me.

We (expats) are allowed to vote in elections again. I registered myself (online) a couple months ago and just today I received my ballot package, sent via DHL courier of all things !
