Photo: Patong Surf Life Saving PHUKET: Patong Mayor Chalermluck Kebsap this week announcing that she had found a way to hire lifeguards to patrol Patong Beach year round, full time deserves high praise. By having Patong Municipality hire the lifeguards directly month by month, Mayor Chalermluck managed to navigate around the official processes enforced by the Thai Government Procurement Department under the Ministry of Finance. The requirements are in place for any government office to follow when offering a government contract. They were rightly instituted to make local government dealings transparent in the country’s never-ending fight against corruption, but nonetheless are onerous, precise and time consuming. That's what they said 30 years ago when I first came here and Phuket was a sleepy tourist town with cashew nut farms. Good to see they have life guards as Phuket is incredibly dangerous for weak swimmers from China and Russian who have never seen coastline before. Imagine them in real surf with 2 metre waves rolling down!! Australians laugh at Phuket (surf) they call it a wading pool.
