right now its pretty dead. police have removed all the freelancers. sorya mall has half a dozen old ice whores and most of the bars have closed. street 136 is busy but I assume its expensive as the girls are all pimped. Im ready to leave. on a positive note, beer is cheap and you can buy low quality weed

why not go see ?, it's not a million clicks away, cheap flight from bkk , or bus it since yr -15k baht, plus you prob still got a packed bag from yr failed trip to patts.

then just start a new topic from wherever you end up.

For the drink you want it all over the face or you prefer it in a glass? ????

If the second option is your, it should be wise to not take a thai girl with you for this trip.

On an other hand i am not sure the cambo girls are very easy to handle too

Enjoy and give some news

it's always refreshing (But beware the ice cube can hurt)

I guess you haven't been following TVF for the last few months. There's been lots of member input on here relative to Cambodia.

Sounds like you and "buddy" got a bit bored at the café.

"Hey 'yall', let's throw a troll post onto ThaiVisa and see who bites".

Unless he was an Aid Worker or a Journalist I doubt that somewhat...

Cambodia is going through rapid development, and it seems they can't seem to find the governance competent enough to  handle the rapid development.

However, as said above, it's only a short hop and certainly cheaper than Thailand these days (for some things) so why not pop over?

It is nice if you have no other choice than to live on low budget, you will get most for your dollars worth. Kind of the same with Laos.
If budget isn't really the issue, neither is visa (elsewhere), I would stick to holidays only.

Question is if (South East) Asia is something for you at all, maybe you will feel more home in countries as Bulgaria etc, cheap / affordable living too.

i agree, no way he lived there in the 80's unless it was '89 Very few white people got in before 85.
I lived in Cambodia 2008/09 and go back 1-2x/year, as have a Khmer gf living with me here in Phuket

Cambodia is NOT cheaper and  is more expensive for 90% of things, its POOR, dirty with sh$#t roads and forget getting sick and expecting decent medical help.  Yet everything from water to driving licenses to gas for ur stove to air for your tires cost More $$$ than Thailand.

If ur happy drinking $.50 swill, smoke cigs and enjoy $5-10 streetwalkers, it might be the place for you.

The people are friendly but so are the Thai's, Burmese, Malays, Laos.  Phnom Penh is experiencing a Mall explosion with over 18 of them already constructed or in the process. Shianoukville, (Kampot to follow soon)  is a Chinese city with over 80 casinos

They keep saying they want more quality tourist but outside Angkor Wat, there is really nothing to see or do for more than a week

You will get much better value for your $ in Thailand.

And contrary to popular posts at times, it is NOTHING like Thailand 30 years ago...

I was there about a year ago.

I was in the afternoon in a bar and they had beer for 50 cents. I didn't complain and the pizza was good.

Suddenly lots of guys walked out of the bar and I asked the waitress what is going on. She said now our happy hour if over and in another place the beer is available for 75 cents.

Maybe that is your kind of place...

It certainly is my kind of place.

In one of the afternoon happy hour bar/restaurants by the river in Phnom Penh, I sat down with my 8 drinking buddies, and the waiter came over and said, "sorry, it's a holiday no happy hour today". As we all got up to leave the manager rushed over and said, "special happy hour prices for this table" and we all sat down again.

They clearly made a profit selling beer at 75c/bottle!

You forgot smoking cannabis.

Couldn't fault my hotel in Siem Reap, double room with swimming pool $10/night.

Much cheaper than anywhere similar I've ever been in Thailand.

Beer by the pool 24/7 for 50c a glass.

SiemReap.jpg

Back to the OP,

Much cheaper than Thailand for beer, cocktails, girls, cannabis, hotels, Indian restaurants.

Much simpler and easier for 1 year VISAs, no financials required for over the 55s.

Lots of power cuts, but I didn't mind as I was always outside, sitting by the pool, and they still managed to keep the beer cold.

If you're OK on your own or mixing with younger backpackers, Siem Reap is very cheap.

If you want to hang with elderly expats, Phnom Penh is the place to be, but like all Capitals, more expensive.

So, you've been to school
For a year or two
And you know you've seen it all
In daddy's car
Thinking you'll go far
Back east your type don't crawl

Playing ethnicky jazz
To parade your snazz
On your five-grand stereo
Braggin' that you know
How the nixxxxs feel cold
And the slum's got so much soul

It's time to taste what you most fear
Right Guard will not help you here

Brace yourself, my dear
Brace yourself, my dear

It's a holiday in Cambodia
It's tough, kid, but it's life
It's a holiday in Cambodia
Don't forget to pack a wife

You're a star-belly snitch
You suck like a leech
You want everyone to act like you
Kiss a** while you bitch
So you can get rich
While your boss gets richer off you

Well, you'll work harder
With a gun in your back
For a bowl of rice a day
Slave for soldiers
Till you starve
Then your head is skewered on a stake

Now you can go where the people are one
Now you can go where they get things done
What you need, my son...
What you need, my son...

Is a holiday in Cambodia
Where people are dressed in black
A holiday in Cambodia
Where you'll kiss a** or crack

Pol Pot, Pol Pot, Pol Pot, Pol Pot

It's a holiday in Cambodia
Where you'll do what you're told
It's a holiday in Cambodia
Where the slums got so much soul
Pol Pot

Learn to haggle better.

I met a really nice girl in a Phnom Penh bar last April, attractive, 30 years old, good English, ready to move right in. If I didn't have a gf and kids back in Thailand, it would have been game on. Just like Thailand used to be.

I enjoy Siem Riep and it has an international airport. Pnonh Pen has some very nice cheap hotels but feels like a dangerous city. The Tuk Tuk drivers warned us to strap ourselves to our bags and I noticed nobody is wearing gold like in Thailand. The rest of the country looks like a Chinese casino resort but I've heard Kampoot is still ok.

I would be careful. they are desperate people, much more so then the Thais even if they are less violent. as long as she takes the boyfriend money and sleeps with him a day a week they are very happy to move in with you and pretend that they are visiting family once a week. every now and again the boyfriend might be jealous so she has to go visit a friend thats just had a motorbike accident and is in hospital for half the night. if you cant get the girl out of cambodia, and you cant, its because they have a boyfriend
