urinating in public

since living here i have noticed many thai men urinating in public. not because of the lack of facilities , i have seen them in an open air eating place with all facilities and they will walk 10 mt up the road  to a tree or a corner, they will leave a temple, with facilities, to walk 50 mt to the woods. i have seen them leave their place of work, again with facilities, to walk 50 or more mt to duck behind an empty property. a truck driver i can understand but civil servants and general public within reach of facilities no excuse, So my question why are they so inexcusably,(whats the word,) dirty. i apologuise i had no idea what forum to place this.

Urinating in public is common in SE Asian countries...when you got to go...you just move away from the public and do your business...I believe it is a continuation of the agricultural economies...some cultural things take longer than others to change...

At least most countries have moved past using human feces in their gardens...

Yes ,because lack of facilities, the only place I have seen a public toilet is in a Petrol station,

or shopping mall.

When you have got to go..you have to go.

Riding with the cops in a patrol chase-car in Luzon in the Phils, bloody uncomfortable in the back because was sitting on an Armalite on the seat. We were escorting a bike race organised  (and paid for) by my now ex-wife along with a speed cop and some local-yokel-cops in pick-ups. I have to say the Chief of Police was and is a personal friend there!

The cop in front wanted to pee so we pulled over, all 3 of us got out and ceremoniously lined up on the verge and relieved ourselves - all around were rice fields, no public toilets and if anyone has ever used a CR (Comfort Room) in the Philippines you'll understand the preference for the road-side verge. I once fumbled in a Petrol station toilet for the light switch - it was wired with galvanised fence wire into a brass tumbler-switch, the naked live wires rising out of it stapled to the wooden wall with fence staples I kid you not. Another garage CR had a snake coiled around the toilet flush-pipe.

Needless to say my ex chose that moment to come past in the van with a driver and was hanging out the window hurling imprecations at me as her driver wisely kept going.

When I first visited Thailand I told my wife that in the UK if we were caught out in the countryside we'd pull over and hide behind a big tree. Her family thought this hilarious and when out in their car one day told my wife I needed a toilet so the sister driving stopped by a tree. This was on the Rangsit-Nahkon Nayok Road near to Rangsit, alongside the canal in full view of 4 lanes of traffic each way. The tree was at least 10cm/4 inches in diameter. Needless to say I declined the offer!

Prior to coming back to Thailand I worked for a few weeks as a landscape gardener on  building site , for of all people my new tenant. Now, I can assure you that going into a portaloo on a building site in the UK is not a pleasant experience - I dread to think what an uncleaned one would be like here in Thailand after a dozen Som tam eating Thais - be like locking yourself in with a hefty dose of Zyklon B.

So I think they must have a law, you wee in it , you clean it ! Hence , everywhere but where they should.

I doubt if there is a community anywhere in the world that doesn't go pee out in nature at least some of the time.

Do not overlook the fact that all creatures, great and small, use nature as their toilet. (including ourselves until recent times) and, actually, much of life thrives and even depends on it.

Yes, Asia can be a bit of a culture shock/rude awakening for some folks, but don't worry O/P, you'll get used to it. (might even end up doing it yourself some day!)

growing up in canada, having a house with a yard, i made a point evenings of having a pee outside before entering the house.

having a house in central bangkok with a yard, during rainy season, i take every opportunity to do the same.

nothing better than pissing outdoors.

Porcelain holds bacteria, bacteria swims upstream!

Unless you have a urinary infection, there is no bacteria in pee. It's actually sterile so it isn't 'dirty' to pee outdoors at all.

Yes, I too often pee in the garden.

To put it simply, The bacteria is on the porcelain from all the other users, that's why they pee outside! ???? It's a joke......Get it?

My home property in the USA is about 2 Rai.  Surrounded by trees in the back.  We have a nice wooden deck out back that is about 4 meters above the ground.  I pee off the deck sometimes.  One of the reasons I bought the place.  We have large hoot owls around, so I hoot and try to <deleted> them off sometimes.  Just not loud enough to annoy the neighbors, though I don't know if they appreciate my harmonica playing ????.  No complaints in 25 years of living here.

40+ years ago up by Chaing Rai or Nan, I can't recall, a buddy and I went to visit a relative of a hill tribe guy in the sticks.  Stopped at a police/Army checkpoint on the road.  We walked across a bit of a field and over a tall dirt berm so we could pee in privacy.   On the other side of the berm maybe 100 meters away was an opium poppy field.  Surprise, surprise!

Well, big improvements have been made over the years, but none the less there are still some facilities that would positively encourage one to go 'pee in the woods'.

Slightly off topic, (but only by about 2 inches!) have anyone here ever had experience with a 'piggy powered loo?'

Yes really. My first experience was in a hill tribe village somewhere near Chiang Mia. Deposits slide down a shoot and are immediately scoffed up by a waiting snorter. I also encountered one in India.

That quickly took care of the disposal problem. But one must cook the meat well later!

A few years ago I was driving my my aunt and uncle to their hotel in Bangkok. As we got off the toll road and were approaching Victory Monument the traffic was at a complete standstill in both directions.

A lady who was trimming the shrubs in the central reservation, right next to our car, lifted her skirt, pulled down her knickers and took a pee.

My aunt and uncle didn't even bat an eyelid - they're Geordies!

I have a bit of a problem with incomplete evacuation.
I think I figured out quite a good way to have that occasional very necessary pee.
I pull the car over then open the front and rear near side doors I Then have my own little “cubicle” and a modicum of privacy

Its a terrible problem in the UK. Areas where there are night clubs and a busy nightime economy are starting to stink of urine the following day. One approach is to arrest men and charge them under the sexual offences act with 'lewd behaviour and public exposure'. That would put peope on the sexual offenders register and soon put an end to the willy wagging vile behavior. The same approach can work in Thailand. I have seen foreigners urinating on the beach against the back wall facing the street in Pattaya.  At least they could go in the sea!
