Thailand's tourism minister Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn has said that targets will be met and 40 million tourists will visit the country next year.

He said he is absolutely sure of that.

His statements came after the influential Tourism Council of Thailand downgraded their forecast to under 40 million in recent reports.

Phiphat also told Nation TV that the free Visa on Arrival (VoA) scheme that was extended to April 2020 may be made permanent.

This applies to about 20 nations but principally tourists visiting from China that makie up a large proportion of Thailand's tourist trade.

Given that market forces including the very strong Baht are discouraging people from coming, not to mention the accident and injury rate, I wonder what he will say if and when the number isn't hit. Most likely he will just do the normal thing and tell barefaced lies. Can't have tourism numbers going down now can we?

Good. The streets more feces and spit in them, the country needs to be much louder with abusive families hitting their children, people pushing their ways to the front of the lines, flags on poles leading the sheep around so they can feel like sophisticated travelers.

China come to Thailand the most.

Chinese spend the most baht per person.

No, that is not what that chart says.

The Chinese spend the most baht per person per day, but Westerners tend to stay far longer, so, their total spend per vacation is higher.

Also, a substantial portion of what the Chinese spend goes straight back to China, as group tours tend to stick to Chinese-owned hotels, restaurants, fake temples, and shopping destinations.

It also does not include the significant amounts of money that Westerners, as more independent travelers, spend on things that are not captured by surveys of this type. That includes relationships, bars, and, yes, the sex industry. All that can add up to significantly more than all the types of spending that are captured.

These details are important if you want to understand why so many Thai businesses are reporting that their tourist customers have all but disappeared, while the government keeps proclaiming the highest tourism numbers of all time.

"Chinese for free' no racism there then

Racism and Nationalism as we call it comes naturally in Asia and other parts of the world and is part of the prevailing culture. It's a concept most of us in the West have been brainwashed into considering as unacceptable.

Therefore Thais are naturally going to accept Orientals more readily than us. It's expected because they are of the same race.

But like Japan and other Asian countries they don't accept immigrants whatever race they may belong to.

The numbers would be very easy to calculate, number of tourist from a country divided by foreign exchange from that country.

No, again, it is very far from the total amount spent by tourists.

It is 28% of spending captured by this survey, which is necessarily going to be quite limited in what it captures.

Hotel spend, possibly some types of restaurants, organized tours and activities, and shopping that happens to getting recorded because the Chinese religiously apply to get back every penny of tax they can when leaving. Those stats are relatively easy for the survey creator to collect. What a Norwegian blows through on a wild night out in Pattaya before getting arrested is not so easy to collect but, even so, it will support several families in Isaan for many months.

Westerners also like to shop, we even tend to be a little less careful with our money. We rarely apply for a tax refunds when leaving Thailand because, frankly, we can't be arsed. In general, we've already foolishly blown so much money while partying that it makes no sense to worry about tax refunds etc.

You are making a common mistake. You are taking the results of a limited survey and presuming that they map to reality, that what you have just read is the actual truth.

There are a lot of Chinese, sure. They spend a lot of money on certain things, sure. The real question is why all this wonderful new spending is somehow not helping the many Thai small business owners who rely on tourism
