PATTAYA:--Najomtien police officers were called out Sept. 22 to investigate reports that a man purporting to be a monk was soliciting alms from passers-by.

Pol. Snr. Sgt. Maj. Somporn Kanthoung attended the scene opposite the Sukhumvit Road turn-off to Wat Yansangwararam and found Sittichai Tansuwan, 39, matching the reported description.

Upon initial questioning, Sittichai, a native of Khon Kaen, admitted that he had no official monk ID documentation but claimed he was affiliated with a temple located in Nong Bua Lumphu province of northern Thailand.

The self-styled wandering priest said he had been in the monkhood for 14 years and was currently on a pilgrimage. He said he stayed at the side of a river in Sattahip for about a week and was now asking for donations from citizens to facilitate a return trip home.

One of the first things that happen after you ordain, is you meet with the head monk of your district where you fill out a form, with name, birthdate, place of birth, parents names, and get a photo. Then within a month, your furnished with a Monk ID.  Your not allowed to wander anywhere on your own for several years.  This guy may or may not be a monk.  He may be just too ignorant to realize he doesn't have his ID on him, or he may have lost it.  Some Monks have the IQ of som tam salad.  But all Monks know better than to beg for money.  Food yes, money no.  After 14 years he should know better.  But then again, there's that IQ question.

I  have  lost count of how  many of these pretenders who travel about on the back of  vehicles from  far away provinces soliciting donations have come past me. Yet they are  not any  more or less deceitful than the  "genuine" if people  were  more aware of  where the income is mostly destined.

Even the Thai's get tired of these guys. ????

It's the hypocrisy that bothers me.

(I know, same in all religions)

i think this is the same guy who was in Jomtien about a week ago, he came in to the bar on beach road, and started tapping up the Thai girl who with her Farang boyfriend no deal there, and then  approached the staff and was treated in a similar fashion, was in and out as it looked like he had

a lot of bars to cover.

Real monks will not go into bars.  Temptations don't you know.  Plus, real monks are never supposed to solicit money.  Food, clothing, maybe ok, but money, never.  These guys give honest real monks a bad name.
