WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. presidential candidate Bernie Sanders suffered a heart attack earlier this week, his physicians said on Friday, describing his health scare in more specific terms than previously disclosed.

Sanders, 78, abruptly cancelled all campaign events on Tuesday after suffering chest pains. He underwent surgery to treat a blocked artery, having two stents inserted to prop open the artery.

Within hours, his campaign said Sanders, an independent senator from Vermont, was conversing and in good spirits, and on Thursday his wife said he would participate in the fourth Democratic debate on Oct. 15.

But on Friday after Sanders left the hospital, his treating physicians cast the events in a more serious light.

"After presenting to an outside facility with chest pain, Sen. Sanders was diagnosed with a myocardial infarction," Arturo Marchand Jr. and Arjun Gururaj said in a statement, using a medical term for a heart attack.

The two doctors said "all other arteries" were normal for Sanders, and that he was discharged with instructions to follow up with his personal physician.

Their statement, circulated by Sanders' campaign, could raise new questions about Sanders' age and health as he seeks the Democratic Party's nomination to challenge President Donald Trump in the 2020 presidential election.

Sanders has been among the top contenders in a crowded Democratic presidential race and on Friday he said was ready to return to work.

"After two and a half days in the hospital, I feel great," Sanders said in a statement that his campaign circulated together with the comments from his doctors. "After taking a short time off, I look forward to getting back to work."

Sanders is the oldest candidate in a race featuring a generational divide between older contenders such as Sanders and front-runner Joe Biden, 76, and younger ones such as Pete Buttigieg, 37, the mayor of South Bend, Indiana. Trump is 73.

A democratic socialist, Sanders galvanized progressives during a 2016 run for president when he lost the nomination to Hillary Clinton, pushing the Democratic Party to the left and popularizing ideas such as Medicare for All, a proposal for a government-run healthcare plan based on the system for Americans over the age of 65.

In a letter made public during the 2016 campaign, Sanders' doctor said he was in "overall good health" and had no history of cardiovascular disease.

I have always been a strong supporter of Bernie's. He's the ONLY candidate I have EVER donated money to. Unfortunately, I believe you are correct. God help us all if Biden wins the primary.

78 year old and heart attacks starts coming. Yeah, if he now do not have the intelligence to refrain from running for president, can somebody then just tell him the news. Also if that intelligence is not there, how should he have enough to run USA?

I blame the terrible food he has to eat on the campaign trail to prove he's "just folks."  Corn dogs and those other deep-fried things will do you in at that age.

On the other hand I know someone who's had a stent for more than 20 years and is still living.

Don't mention that name!  The pro-DT crowd is scared shirtless of her, they are probably running for the garlic and crucifixes already!

If DT were to say "I ain't leaving unless I take Biden down with me" my response would be "let's do it today!"

I like The Bern but he is well past his best before date. He should take pride in how he brought the Medicare for All issue to the forefront. Would be nice if he dropped out with dignity and endorsed Warren. Once fully recovered he could go back on the  campaign trail supporting her.

Probably true, but that makes 3 other frontrunnners way too old as well. Speaking for myself, I will not be voting for any septugenarians. Whether that be Sanders (whom I revere), nor Biden, nor Warren, nor Trump. I will be casting my vote for Yang.

I like a lot of Sanders' political positions...

But, his role in the 2016 campaign helped ensure the defeat of Hilary Clinton by fragmenting Democratic and independent support for Clinton, who, despite all her flaws and negatives, it's abundantly clear now that she would have been far better for the country than the abomination that is Trump.

Now 4 years later and 4 years older just coming off a heart attack, it's not time for a repeat of 2016, and it is time for Sanders to bow out and let the younger generation of candidates vie for the nomination.

The last thing the U.S. needs after 4 years of Trump is to elect a Democratic president who might well die or suffer serious health problems during his first term in office.

Oh well Commie Bern can afford the medical bills im sure... thats him done in running then.

Should really do some reading to gain knowledge. He and all members of Congress are on a national government healthcare program. As am I since I am on Medicare. I suppose you call me a commie too. It has as much validity as your statement concerning Bernie.

You can be whatever you want but Bernie is literally a self proclaimed socialist and has been all his career.

Socialism and communism are two different words in the English language. This is due to their having two different meanings. Had you called Bernie a socialist, I could not have disagreed. I too could be called a democratic socialist as I believe in a balance in society for the benefit of all citizens of a given country. You could thus expect me to resist attacks on my Social Security/Medicare, public education, etc. The question is where the citizens decide to draw the balance.

I have no problem with the ages of any of them.  It is their agenda for moving the country forward that counts. Sanderes has for years been touting universal healthcare and the demise of private insurance which I agree with completely. A government  needs to take care of those things  that  revolve around life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness and Bernie's programs would do that.  I am afraid hi illness will turn off the public but if he picked Warren as his VP- that might turn the tide.

Yang's proposal to give everyone $1,000 per month shows that he truly understands the future. He is aware that AI is going to displace a huge number of people and the guaranteed income would ease the transition.  However, before I would vote for him- I need to see much more regarding his proposals for geting a balanced budget;  universal healthcare and foreign policy.
