TAT to focus on enticing Thais to holiday in the Kingdom

Based on the Tourism Authority of Thailand’s finding that reservations from Thai International Travel Fairs show over 12 million Thai people will travel outside the country from the New Year to the Songkran festival next year, the agency is accelerating two tourism support strategies to entice people to explore their own Kingdom.

With the baht strengthening from the beginning of the year to October and remaining at Bt30.53 per US dollar, many airlines in Thailand have opened multiple new international routes for this year’s fourth quarter. At the same time, it provides an opportunity for Thai hotel operators to look to expanding their international hotels, the authority said.

For the Songkran period, Thai bookings of overseas tour packages have increased from last year, Kanyanee Asanee, the vice president of Thai Tourism Services Association (TTAA), said.

Thai International Travel Fairs this past August found that the amount of money Thais spent on travel packages at the fairs increased by 90 per cent. As well, the operators of overseas tours at the fairs saw a rise in purchases from last year’s Bt200 million to Bt350 million this year, and visitors hit 250,000. Bookings remained quite active after the event all the way from New Year’s to Songkran next year. Japanese travellers showed high interest, followed by Vietnamese.

Due to market competition, low-cost airlines were stimulated to sell packages for the New Year’s to Songkran period. Packages were framed as “Earlybird” in place of the previous “Fire sale” with an accompanying reduction in booking cost.

The number of Thai people going abroad may not increase by more than 10 per cent in the coming year, however. This January to August saw approximately 8 million Thais go abroad, with expectations that it would rise to at least 10.5 million, with spending of at least Bt3.5 billion by the end of this year. For the fourth quarter of 2019, additional international routes are being opened by Thailand’s airlines, especially to Japan.

TAT’s Yuthasak Supasorn said many airlines have opened up new routes, and this has caused prices to lower for overseas package tours. The strengthened baht has encouraged more Thais to book travel tours abroad, and the TAT is concerned that the number holidaying out of the country could reach 12 million people this year.

That has led TAT to increase support for encouraging Thais to travel at home. In addition to the Eat-Shop-Spend economic stimulus already launched, TAT is preparing the “100 Travel Around” project for a November launch on the TAT website, “Tourismthailand.org”. Early comers will be able to make reservations without having to open an application. The government is supporting that initiative with a Bt63 million budget. Another project, “Weekday Travel, Shock Price World”, is also supported by the government with a budget of Bt52 million to provide a voucher with a discount of up to 70 per cent.

Amazing indeed.

They have come full circle.

In the beginning there were the Thai's, then Mercans, then Europeans, followed by the Brits, the Aussies and New Zelanders. Then there are the Chinese, and the Indians, but they have reduced in numbers ......... and now it's back to the Thai's again.

Full circle. ????

Thai Baht is strong.

Thais require BIG FACE photos for Facebook.

So travelling abroad is a must for them where they can take almost identical, tacky photos in front of tourist sites to show everyone how fancy they are.

Plus, they get better deals on useless handbags and clothing in other countries.

Good luck TAT

Of course, it cold be that Thais have realised that they don't want to lay on filthy sewage and garbage littered beaches and are seeking somewhere cleaner

Except that now, they can sit in their own filth and squalor on the beaches!

Wonder how they will like that?

Probably won't notice...…...

Where do they get the 12 million number? Does this include those Thais that cross the borders of Myanmar, Laos, Cambodia, and Malaysia to go and forth to work? TAT predictions are the most laughable bits of media hot air. But they are Thai, so that says it all.

We would take at least 4 holidays per year in Thailand. Family of 4 plus helper for my disabled son. Hotels, dining out, parks, theme parks, etc etc etc. We spend a lot in Thailand.

But, we currently don't because of the hassle with the TM30 now. Each time as soon as we got home we have to trot off to immigration the next morning with forms completed and photocopies. I've lived in this house over 10 years, and used the same immigration office. I can't be bothered with the inconvenience and couple of hours drive every time. While this is the rule, we'll holiday outside Thailand so as to make the inconvenience worthwhile.

Maybe TAT should think about this and think about how they can get foreigners living here to visit all over Thailand. There's plenty of places to see and plenty of people I talk to want to go and see them. But just get put off.

I'm not a TM30 apologist but I use something called the Internet. No photocopy, forms, gaz and it takes my wife 5min to complete.

I'm not sure I can agree with TAT's strategy here. Money spent by Thais holidaying in Thailand will not result in much incremental economic growth, but will merely transfer spending from one part of the economy to the tourist sector, with no additional growth,

Does the 5 minutes include the time it takes them to send you your login details?

Better to have that money transferred from one part of the economy to another rather than leave the country entirely.

Also, having lots of Thais wandering about the tourist attractions helps to mask the mysterious reduction in Western tourists.

Took 3 weeks but you only do it once. I read the process now even take less than 24h. It's worth trying.

Even Thais know Thailand is now dirty, unfriendly, overpriced and in general an old gnawed bone. TAT should close the immigration gates, bulldoze all malls and concrete beach resorts, demolish roads next to beaches and let the fauna grow back for 20 years. Then, perhaps, a few timid tourists could be let in.
