An 18 wheel truck driver told the media that he drove his vehicle into a post and telephone junction box after losing control during a coughing fit.

Preecha, 44, was only slightly hurt but the collision in the Klong 2, Pathum Thani area left locals without electricity and the internet.

He said he had been coughing for days - the media said don't drive if you are feeling ill.

The report was part of Daily News' ongoing campaign to raise awareness about the carnage on the Thai roads.

Wednesday was a relatively good day for fatalities with just 30 nationwide but the media, as usual, warned that these are just those that die at the scene of accidents.

In reality the figures will be higher especially when all fatalities, both at the scene and in hospitals, are finally reported.

Deaths at the scene this month are now at 404.

The total for the year stands at 11,313.

Thaivisa notes that the total death toll from road accidents in Thailand has generally been accepted as around 24,000 to 26,000 per annum.

The coughing fit became an effective excuse in Melbourne a few years ago......until a man, separated and angry with his wife, claimed that in his defence  He drove his car off the road, avoided a tree and bushes and ended up in a dam some distance from the road.  His three young sons on the back seat drowned.

He's doing 40 years.  Don't try it in Victoria.

Coughing fit excuse here is older than brake failure. Avoiding a monitor lizard was the latest. The unrestrained 2yr old child on his fathers lap was killed possibly by the airbag or else hitting the windscreen.

Speed is the underpinning factor in all of this carnage.
