Why would you think that it is appropriate to enter Thailand on a Tourist Visa when your Passport clearly shows you are not a Tourist?

Ha ha, definition of tourist ?  One who isn't employed within the country but spends his time in leisure ........??    Plus where's the passport ?

obtained a re-entry permit on my week old tourist visa

That's it right there. You were entering on a tourist visa instead of a visa suitable for your circumstances. The days you could live in LOS on a TV long gone.

Would have been better to go to Singapore to activate the Malaysian permit.

Let's face it- LOS does not want people on TVs living in the country. TVs are for people visiting and leaving to go home.

It's been that way for a few years now.

12.9 is for not having 20K. They denied him under 12.2 no appropriate means of living in thailand (this is no necessarily about money) and 12.3 because they suspect him of working in Thailand since he has a lot of previous work permit.

The immigration officers avoid actually looking at any proof of having 20 k baht (or equivalent) because if they don't see it, it simply doesn't exist, ie, it never existed and 12.2 is validated. If they see the money, they have to acknowledge it and 12.2 is invalidated. It's a belt and braces move since they can't easily prove 12.3.

As for the OP, he claims to have lived in Thailand for 20 years while working legally both locally and internationally. As his experience at Pedang Besar indicates, his immigration history, like that of pretty much every other foreigner with a machine readable passport these days, is now available on any immigration officers computer at any point of arrival.

Despite still working professionally, the OP is more than qualified by age to get a Non-O visa based on retirement in Thailand and has been for maybe 3 years already. Despite being aware that SETV and METV are increasingly no longer kosher for those with clear evidence that they are living in Thailand, "a country that I've lived in more than half of my life," the OP kept traveling on those. The OP should also have been well aware that Thai immigration advice isn't always in your best interest as the new passport ruse has been well and truly sidelined by the aforementioned enabling and use of their Thai immigration history at points of arrival.

As well as simply refusing to sign the papers; IMHO the only good thing that the OP did, the OP would have been better off filing an appeal rather than stroking his ego in a stinking airport cell for an alleged 5 days.

Taking the story at face value, it is as the title says, a warning to those concerned that living in Thailand without permission is difficult and likely to become more so.

These stories are meat and drink to the forum so does it matter if Syduang is a troll?

I agree, if this story was fully genuine and he had done no wrong, he shouldn't be concerned but it does seem that there are some holes in the story.

It should be criminal for them to refuse you entry on not having sufficient funds when you have 20k in your wallet and a Thai bank book with you. Why don't they have another reason for refusal such as "person attempted to enter on incorrect visa type", rather than using the same old insufficient funds as a catch all to deny anyone?

Check the 7th of June, the date of the incident.......

Let me just clarify this. The account is true and Mr Syduan only posted it.......The incident has now been taken up as a legal case of defamation against Thai immigration.......Something you wouldn't attempt unless you have the evidence.......

How do you know that this has been taken up as a legal case of defamation?

Well I'm a Brit and have been to the British Embassy in London, close to Victoria station and bus Terminal. That was some years ago when I went to renew a passport.

Where else would you renew a passport?

Ahhh, grasshopper....

At your issuing countries passport office(s) in the issuing country or at that countries overseas embassy or maybe a consulate in some countries.

A country cannot have it's own embassy in it's own country.

Who's bank book is this and if not yours why are you posting it and not the OP?

Anyway it proves nothing as there is no name on it.

It gets more and more fishy.

Der, it's a current case not to be tried and judged on TV but in a court of law.  No names, hence the poster is not the individual concerned. It's just been posted here as a tester.......it's working....

If you look at the book you'll see the 7th was the incarceration date and the 11th was the release.......it's kosher........
