And I've just read a foreigner's post who was "lucky" that the cops didn't take him out because he was so hammered.

 

And he added that he'd do that always?

 

   He's even proud of it and made it look like his Thai speaking skills saved him.

From the numbers you gave, it appears that Thailand
has more that twice the road mortality per capita than the world average

   It's a worldwide phenomenal that men are better in technique and driving, 

 

  That seems to go back to a time long ago ( thousands of years) when we had to protect you and do all the practical things while you "only" had to give birth to our babies and prepare some food for us. Innit?

An interesting observation.

Since the subject matter is the road toll in Thailand your closing question should rather be:

....."what is wrong with Thai man/child brain?"

The Thai Government have no commitment to reducing the road toll as there is no kickbacks or brown envelopes. Thai Goverment needs to bite the bullet, and set up a review and implementation commitee to review the complete structure of the police force.This commitee should be made up of senior or retired police officers from some of the best policed countries in the world.eg.Uk,Germany,Switzerland to name a few.The lack of education and nepatism of the Thai Police is but the tip of the iceberg, promotion by paying the officers above the vacancy for the candidate to be promoted is just one rotten branch of the whole rotten tree.This of course will never happen as too many "elite" will miss out on their "tea money" and secondly Thais cannot stand losing face by admitting they are wrong or incapable.

Well, according to the article the real figure is 24,000 to 26,000 deaths a year. Let's say 25,000 and divide by 365 and you get 68.5 which is over double internet data numbers

It all comes back to the appalling ease of gaining a drivers license. My Thai Wife is 43 years old, had never driven a car and all she had to do was have lessons, minimum 5 hours, with two off road and three on road, pass an online exam at the driving school and then off to Land Transport to collect her license, all within ten days!!!!

Did mine last month. 10 hours practical (two hours of which were on the road) and just over half a day of theory before taking both practical and theory tests. My wife did hers a couple of weeks earlier. The practical test requires three things, 1) drive forward and reverse between a set of posts, 2) reverse park in parking bay, and 3) drive alongside the curb and stop (not exceeding 25 cm from the curb). Theory test is 50 questions and you must get at least 45 correct. Because some of the "correct" answers for the English test are actually wrong, I took the test in Thai.  

 

Basically, the test does not focus anywhere near enough on driving on the roads, etiquette, things to watch out for, etc. But I have my license now and bought a new car so at 56 I will start on the massive learning curve of driving a car on the dangerous roads of Thailand. BTW I have not driven a car since I was 18 (and failed my test in the UK).
