Boy, 13, shot dead by police after father U-turns at northern Thai checkpoint

A thirteen year old boy has been shot dead by police in a pick-up driven by his father.

His father - carrying bootleg liquor in the back - doubled back on seeing a checkpoint in Phayao province.

Four police gave chase and the boy sitting in the front passenger seat was killed when police took aim at the Vigo pick-up.

Police thought they were chasing a drug dealer.

Kritsanapong Soongkhao died in Lampang Hospital on Monday following the shooting in Wang Neua, Lampang, district by officers attached to the Mae Ka, Phayao, police station.

They are now being questioned and the Lampang provincial police chief Pol Maj-Gen Anucha Uamcharoen has paid a visit.

Manop Soongkhao, 35, the boy's father said that he was carrying ten plastic bags of bootleg liquor in the back of his pick-up. On seeing the checkpoint on the Wang Neau to Phayao Road (in the Mae Ka police jurisdiction) he decided to U-turn and go home.

A chase ensued and after the pick-up hit a plough near an intersection a shot was fired at a back tire that went through the rear window and the front seat hitting the boy in the head.

Daily News reported that Mae Ka police thought there were drugs in the pick-up.

sad for the boy. but how does a shot fired at a back tire (low target) end up going through the back of the cab (high target). Vert bad shooting, or shooter is lying.

well I can agree, however how can anyone see if there is a passenger in the car with those tinted windows.

and did the bullet ricochet ??

Lack of firearms training I am afraid.  The police have to buy there own ammo so many are reluctant to do regular training.  Only a year or so back a video was taken of a Pattaya cop unloading his magazine in an attempt to  blow out the tyres on a car.  This was on Beach Rd outside Soi 9 police station with a lot of bystanders around.  In this latest case of cowboy cops,  Sadly, the young boy will never get to experience life.

Shooting at tyres to stop a vehicle is crazy. In this case a boy was shot dead but, even if the shot had been accurate, the truck could have gone out of control and killed someone.

It's about time the police here were given the training and equipment they need. Stingers, which let tyres down slowly, Tazers to give them a non-lethal option.

From the video I've seen it seems that 99% of the time they only need to follow the car. After a couple minutes the car eventually hit something and stop by itself. They could use the new attack helicopter for that purpose.

Unless someone shot at the police they should have never fired on the truck no matter what they were thinking it was.  The one who killed the kid needs to get the death sentence.

Lethal force did not seem justified in this instance.

Typical hypocrisy from the morals keepers. While shooting in this case wasnt the best decision, who are we to sit here and judge from the very limited info we do have. Also, why should another family get totally ruined because of a "mistake" like this?

The moment you start a police chase, is the moment you put other peoples life at risk, and in this case the father did put his son life at risk too.

I am not justifying the shot made, but calling for death sentence this lightly isnt to show high moral standards either.

Lots of comments criticising the police action and marksmanship -- even giving the responsible person the death penalty!  Obviously stingers and tazers would help in many cases but wouldn't in this case.

Thailand is a large third-world country. The police are only semi-trained and buying their own ammunition is not conducive to any firearms practice!  The Law allows them to carry guns, the Law allows them to fire their weapons without seeking permission.  The blame should be on the Law rather than the policeman who unwisely shot poorly from a moving vehicle!  And in Thailand the Law ain't gonna change!

I'm surprised the Thai police don't have some kind of rule of engagement like don't take out the weapon and fire it unless you're under some kind of physical threat.

Someone driving away from you is never a reason to open fire unless they're firing at you.

I guess they needed to win no matter the cost.

I wasn't there and most likely no one in this forum was either. Speculation serves no purpose, and is of little use.

Shocking What chance of a head shot just really bad shooting or bad luck on the young boy and the conscience of the  person who pulled the trigger .Why pull a gun anyway i'm  sure other ways to stop the pick up .

Nobody is saying, about the responsibility of the father. He nő wants to stop. Provoked a chase. Hé is the main culprit. He Stop at first sign, Never happened this tragedy.

The father should have never taken his son with him on his smuggling drives!

The one who killed the kid needs to get the death sentence. Not likely. Inactive post for a while most likely.

Yes, and instead of slow pick-up truck and old motorbike the should have real chase car with dash cam that can follow all those guy flying the scene. No need to fire a gun.

Actually some nice Toyota Camry and BMW sit in  some Immigration office and Highway police use them to  escort VIP.  Traffic police is not equipped to intercep of chase car on the roads.

Im a bit confused, even if its suspect drug run how do the Cops Know if its Class A or Cannabis that’s deemed available now the Government gets its cut.?. Hence Shooting at suspects doesn’t seem possible anymore...⚖️
