Thakoon Intharachom, SRT’s director of train operation, said today (October 17) that the SRT board approved the hiring of AIT at its meeting on Wednesday. “AIT will upgrade SRT’s existing website for online ticket selling and reservation, as well as extending the service to users of mobile devices and handheld computers,” said Thakoon. “This project also covers the improvement of automatic ticket machines and payment methods including cash, cards and e-money”. The agreed term of reference, he said, dictates that the project must be completed within 15 months and the SRT will ensure that the digital platform will be operational before the end of 2020. "We will see to it that the new e-ticketing service will be available to our customers as early as possible," he added. “To use the service, customers must download the mobile application “D-ticket”, sign up for an account, buy a ticket and pay via internet banking or credit cards. After the initial steps, they will receive a QR code that can be scanned to display travel information,” he said. “Alternatively, they can reserve a seat online or via hotline 1690 and pay for the ticket at a station counter, the same as reserving a plane ticket”. It then goes on to explain that customers will need to 'sign up for an account' in order to pay electronically. I'm guessing that will rule out tourists straight away. Here's an opportunity to bring the ticket sales system into the real world, but it must be 'real world' Thai-style. JAG Posted October 18, 2019 Share Posted October 18, 2019 Look at who uses the trains on - for example the route which I know, the "Northern Line". from Bangkok to Chiang Mai. Apart from tourists, who are. as "Bluesofa" has pointed out, effectively precluded by the initial steps required to join the scheme, and the occasional enthusiast (nutter) for vintage train travel like myself, virtually all the rest are low income locals, often travelling a few stops between various provinces or towns. The money would be far far better spent on upgrading the infrastructure - signalling and tracks, and repairing the large amount of locomotives and rolling stock parked up unserviceable in sidings up and down the network. This would allow them to operate a better and more frequent service (particularly local trains) for their existing customers, who are more than happy to go to the railway station, hand over some cash and wait for the train clutching a card ticket. Almost 1 billion baht or 33 million US dollars for some basic ticketing software. Even with the basic SRT management kickbacks AIT must be laughing all the way to the bank. Small wonder the SRT is verging on bankruptcy and can't pay Hopewell or other creditors. They probably could have purchased a copy of Vietnam's railway E ticket system. They have had their's up and running since 2015. That tells a story about SRT and Thailand in itself.
