Twenty-six members of the Hazardous Substance Committee have reached a verdict to approve a planned ban on three toxic pesticides – Paraquat, Chlorpyrifos and Glyphosate – which are widely used in agriculture, Deputy Prime Minister and Public Health Minister Anutin Charnvirakul posted on his personal Facebook page on Tuesday.

Here’s the voting results:

Paraquat – 21 votes for a ban, 5 votes for a limit on usage;

Chlorpyrifos – 22 votes for a ban, 4 votes for a limit on usage;

Glyphosate – 19 votes for a ban, 7 votes for a limit on usage.

Anutin thanked “every party which supports the banning of the three pesticides” and “congratulated Thais for having government officials and academics who have ethics and integrity”.

I am certain this will drag out and eventually be reduced to restrictions on usage. It's mad to ban Glyphosate. Used properly it is a huge labor saver.

Most likely a limited ban with restriction guidelines, certification and banned in certain highly populated cities. This will ensure all get something and Anutin need not resign.

That would be the best solution.

HomePro, Watsadu and alikes do already not sell this <deleted> anymore. You can of course still find it in the garden markets or online (Shopee, Lazada...).

I guess we really dont need farmers.....Food comes from the grocery store any ways...

That's the funny thing,everybody will be rushing to the grocery store tomorrow expecting a full line of organic produce.

Only to find Mananya has ballsed this up,she should of started with the chemicals used in crop with withholding periods.

Three controversial farm chemicals to be banned from December 1st

3-substances.png

The National Hazardous Substances Committee (NHSC) has agreed, by majority votes, to ban the import, sale and use of paraquat, glyphosate and chlorpyrifos in Thailand from December 1st.

The Committee voted as follows:

Paraquat: 21 votes to ban vs 5 votes to restrict.

Chlorpyrifos: 22 votes to ban vs 4 votes to restrict.

Glyphosate: 19 votes to ban vs 7 votes to restrict.

Deputy Prime Minister and Public Health Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, a vocal supporter of a complete ban, hailed the NHSC’s resolution, saying that the “heroic act” of the committee will be inscribed in the history of Thailand and maintained that the fate of the three chemicals was not a political issue and his Bhumjaithai party did not politicize the issue for its own benefit.

As of December 1st, he said possession of any of the three substances will be illegal.

26 of the 29 members of the NHSC attended the meeting, chaired by Mr. Panuwat Duriyangkurasri, acting on behalf of the committee chairman who, along with two other committee members, opted out of vote due to concerns over possible conflicts of interest arising from their close connections with the chemical industry.

The Department of Agricultural Techniques will draft a ministerial regulation following the NHSC’s decision and will hold public hearings to gauge the views of all stakeholders before submitting a report to the NHSC for consideration.

The department has also been tasked with managing the inventories of the three herbicides in the possession of the traders in a way which will limit impacts on the traders and farmers who may still need the substances.

I watched a show just yesterday and Al Jazeera English about Agricultural Pesticides. Just another American industry that cares more about profit than the effect these products have on humans. It gets into the food chain and while some effects are yet unknown, others are clearly detrimental to the health of many in '3rd world countries'. The main concern of the show was the fact that while those chemicals are exported to other countries, they are banned from use in the USA. But those same countries exported to use them on crops which are then imported by the USA for consumption. Idiots!

Business as usual, I would expect.

Probably as there could still be a legal challenge -

Meanwhile, the Rak Mae Klong group, which opposes the complete ban, has threatened to lodge a petition with the Administrative Court, demanding an injunction from the court to suspend the December 1st enforcement of the ban.

Leader of the group, Mrs. Anchulee Lam-amnuayporn, said that they will go to the Administrative Court on October 28th.

I would have thought there would be much more than 5 weeks stock in the supply chain as well........

How will the possibly thousands of litres of these chemicals that are already distributed  arround Thailand be disposed of? Poured into the nearest river?

@farmerjo talked about a buyback but more probably it will get used while farmers find an alternative.

The talk in my village is of restricting the purchase of chemicals to those who have undertaken a government course in how to use them. Simply means you need a bit of paper from the Ampur office saying you can buy it. Not a bad idea as the chemicals they talk about are herbicides not pesticides and don't show up in the food chain and nor do they contaminate the soil. In fact used properly they are harmless.

There's been a lot of nonsense talked by emotional people on this subject but it is important to understand a lot of peoples livelyhoods are at stake and for no good reason.
