Tourism chief to discuss lowering aviation fuel tax

Following a meeting of the joint committee from the Ministry of Transport on the development of Thailand’s transport network to promote tourism, Minister of Tourism and Sports Pipat Ratchakitprakarn said on Tuesday (October 22), that he is planning to discuss with the transport and finance ministries the possibility of lowering aviation fuel tax for domestic flights to help lessen the burden of airline operators who are currently paying the tax for their passengers.

The fuel cost, he added, represents 40-50 per cent of total airline costs.

“Currently the tax is applied to domestic flights not international ones,” he said. “I would like the Ministry of Finance to consider lowering the aviation fuel tax, which will ultimately help promote domestic tourism, complementing government’s policy of using tourism to drive the economy.”

Pipat added that the demand for airport slots is another problem that needs immediate attention, especially at Suvarnabhumi, Don Muang, Phuket and Chiang Mai, which have clustered flights all year long. “We are planning to talk to airlines in an attempt to persuade them to disperse their flights to less crowded airports such as Hat Yai, Udon Thani, Ubon Ratchathani, Khon Kaen, Chiang Rai and Surat Thani,” he said. “These airports have the capability to handle large planes like the Airbus A320, so there shouldn’t be any problem.”

“Meanwhile, airports in non-major cities in the South such as Trang, Ranong and Chumphon may need to expand their runways to accommodate international flights as the demand of chartered flights from China is increasing continually,” said Pipat. “Currently Chinese airlines book over 20,000 seats per month but the traffic leading to and from Suvarnabhumi Airport is heavily congested, preventing us to receive all of them, which is a shame.”

The only problem,is people maybe don't want to go there,

example someone wants to got to Chiang Mai,will not accept

flying to Chiang Rai instead, why don't these minister think

before they open their mouths and put forward ideas that

are not feasible.

Didn't the report say it was for internal flights as no fuel tax is charged on international flights.

But still true for those who live on Pound, Dollar, Euro.. and want to fly domestic?

Lowering aviation fuel tax? Lower price for domestic flights?

What a contrast to climate panic countries where the exact opposite is in preparation.

Don't tell Greta

All this tinkering with the problem is meaningless.

Less crowded airports are less crowded for a reason - no one wants to go there.

I am enjoying watching the capitulation of Thai tourism in real time and the clown shoes response of every minister thinking he has the solution...dimwits.

But only going to hurt the people not those who have the power to make the changes required to correct it.

Is there anything not true in what he posted?

He's guilty of breaking the 11th commandment: Thou Shalt Not Criticize Thais.

Not a troll.

Just someone who deeply hates incompetent, arrogant culture and is deeply pleased when maintainers of such a culture finally must pay the price.

I am sure that part of you 'loving the wheels fall off' will be watching the human cost of this.  To say that Thai culture is arrogant is just plain untrue.

OK. You seem to have your opinion, and I have mine.

And that's OK.

My opinion is not voluntary. It is from nearly 30 years here (on and off) in more areas of life than 99.9% of foreigners ever experience here.

It is from once caring about the country and people but being let down by so many and so frequently that I no longer - at all.

Some urgent steps for tourism

- 1 US$ = 40 THB

- lower the price of the barstool hookers entertainers, with a price fixed

- clean up Pattaya of all the scum and trouble makers, anybody bullying or fighting is OUT and banned

- make all the retailers in the malls slash their prices by 20% by law

- force all the drunks to quit - by taxing booze at far higher rates

- stop the joke and abolish the TM forms

- abolish dual pricing

- give tourists (people staying not more then a month)  50% discount on all public transport, including taxis

- stop giving so much power to the immigration officer behind his desk

- severly punish any official trying to racket to extort money from a foreigner

- provide proper soapys at Suvarnabhumi airport - both on Arrival and Departure

- severly punish any Taxi-TuktUk refusing the meter or refusing a ride

...... and tourism will soar, overnight ! :welcomeani:

You forget air quality and the plastic dirt in the sea.

Seeing that it only gets worse I don't believe that they will be able to fix this.

Thais that can afford to fly domestically will still do so but it isn't going to attract the masses....they travel 12 to a pick up, park on the beach with their Hong Thong and booming music...won't make a jot to domestic travel whatsoever.

Would you be so kind as to fly from Bangkok to Surat-Thani then take a bus to Krabi.. it would help to smooth things out enormously, and we wouldn't have to come up with a long term solution!
