Is it really worthwhile getting a VPN

I use a VPN called Browsec which was recommended on a previous TVF post and it is excellent, simple, efficient and very reasonable. I tried all of the main ones e.g.Nord, Express,IPVanish etc, none of which worked as well as Browsec.  I watch U.K. TV on a Firestick and have BBC iPlayer, All4, ITV Hub, My5,  and Livenet TV for Sports although a VPN is not required for Livenet TV. If you want to watch U.K. Freesat programmes without a VPN TVMucho is very good and again, very reasonable.

I don't know if any other poster has mentioned this but if they are gonna start knocking on doors to arrest people logged into xhamster then they had better build a lot more prisons and courts because it is gonna get very busy very quick.

Unless you are a paedophile or worse , writing disparaging remarks about  ' the institution '  , or doing a lot of online money transactions of questionable legality then why bother. As one of the first posters said , if you are doing nothing wrong you have little to worry about.

I like to use Hulu for my American TV programs. To use them you have to have a VPN, because they don't let anyone outside the US us them. Netflix does, but Hulu doesn't.

If you have a paid Netflix subscription you can stream from almost anywhere. But, you will only have access to the content that Netflix makes available to your actual geographic regional location which is detected through your ISP's address. I only use a Proxy to stream US Netflix content, US TV, BBC, AUS TV, VUDU and other services while living in Thailand.

I have to have a VPN to enter certain websites in the US. For example some of the government related sites will not accept you if they see you are located in Thailand. So by having a VPN I have no issues at all. Another reason was dealing with my bank in the US. As I have been kicked out of my bank account when I go directly from here (Thailand) whereas, when I use a VPN I have no problems at all. I called the bank to find out why and they told me that Thailand is on their badboy list for corruption. And my last reason is, I like to use Hulu for my American TV programs. To use them you have to have a VPN, because they don't let anyone outside the US us them. Netflix does, but Hulu doesn't. So that are the reasons I have to have a VPN account.

I use a VPN (NordVPN) for these exact reasons/uses (except I don't have a Hulu acct.).

With regards to NetFlix, I've found that there is some content available only in Thailand some only from the US. So it actually broadens the amount of content I can get from them. (I should try going through England or other European countries to see what might be available.) I don't even need to login/logout of my NetFlix acct. I just disconnect or connect through the VPN then refresh the web page with NetFlix.

I use this and it works well esp for iPlayer etc, although there CAN be some fiddling about if I have logged out and forget to log back in again..........apart from that, cheap and great!

PS. Have tried the other main VPNs mentioned but am sticking with SmartDNS.

PPS. And it doesn't seem to slow down my internet speed.

I had the same problem. I contacted the VPN support and they told me to change the location and that will clear it up. I use VPN to have Hulu from the US. I was using Los Angles as my location and I was blocked by Hulu because they found out I wasn't in the US. So taking the advice of support, I switched my location to Florida and I have never had an issue since. It's been two years now.

Unfortunately, for Australia VPNs seem be lacking in servers, one or two at the best.

I've been using a very reliable VPN service for at least 12 years now to access UK TV. There is the occasional hiccup when the BBC latch on to them but the problem is always quickly resolved.

And amazingly, I'm still paying the same subscription that I was when I signed up all those years ago.

I need a good VPN that can connect to Australia!

OK Bruce, might be able to help you there. Like I said, I access UK, but the crew I use covers Australia as well as many other countries. Go take a look at:

VPN helps with geo- blocking. One thing to remember, though: Quite a few sites (banking, TM30, TM6 etc)  won't work unless you switch off VPN - no big deal, just has to be remembered...

If the bank blocks your use of VPN go to another bank.

Which is more important to you financial security or the banks pussyfooting around with your security mostly at the behest of Governments that are scared of there own shadow.

Remember if you get scammed because you used an open WiFi login you have no argument with any bank.

So it is entirely your choice, and whilst I do not access porn I do know know where my security has a better chance and that is with a VPN and the nay sayers can pooh pooh it as much as they want

Hi elegeon

I put the livenettv app onto my android box and also downloaded MX player to play live sport within the app. There is a huge amount of live sport available and I have noticed several time American basketball games.

The only cost is an Android box and a cable to my router.

Almost HD quality then on my TV screen

Thanks Brer,

Is there a way to see a schedule of what team plays when?

Definitely -- you can watch on any device that connects to the Internet. They offer most channels that broadcast US sports events.  So far, minimal problems with connection/streaming.

So you just go to that website? Is there a way to find Los Angeles Lakers games?

To watch a specific team, very are several websites that show schedules and TV channel the game is being shown, e.g. https://sports.yahoo.com/nba/teams/la-lakers/schedule/

If it is one of the channels available, e.g, ESPN, then you should be able to watch it live on any device that connects to the Internet.

There is a schedule if you go to the top left hand corner on the main screen and click on where you see three horizontal lines in a circle, you should then see a drop down box select live events and you should see a screen as I have posted which you can then scroll up and down to see what is live and what is further scheduled.

The second image shows Houston v Brooklyn in the NBA tomorrow.

Well I signed up for Zattoo before I left Switzerland (I think it is restricted to where you can sign up though) and now get all UK channels including Dave (overrated) for about $10 a month. Although you can't watch "live" TV outside of a few countries in Europe you can "record" programmes that have been transmitted in the last week and and watch them immediately! Usually good quality HD stuff and good response (10+MBits/sec).

Of course that is a stuff load of good if you can't sign up in Thailand but I use VyperVPN (also Swiss mainly because of the laws against government snooping I think, I believe it's actually US based) $70 a year I seem to remember which combined is less than I was paying for cable subscription in Switzerland. Most of the time I can watch BBC IPlayer and geo-blocked Netflix programmes quite happily. Sometimes the finks smell a rat and cut me off for using a VPN but reconnecting usually gets you another IP address that is "good" - touch wood works most of the time. Yes they do slow down your bandwidth quite considerably but it's "usually" usable.

I'm told you can use it to access banned porn sites in Thailand and Singapore but i wouldn't possibly know about that, honest guv (luv).

If you travel and connect to open networks its wise to use a VPN so others dont hack your device or intercept your connection and steel your data.

Yes, good reason for everybody to have one, travel or not. Starbucks anywhere is not a place to go naked.

VPN has many advantages as named by some above. This is a common topic on TVF so search recent archives.

Finding a trustworthy one is the real chore. I spent considerable time and even did 1 month trials with my own experiments to test them.

I chose EXPRESSVPN and have had them for many years now. $99/yr, can install on tablet, laptop, phone all for same price. Excellent support. They own and staff ALL their servers in many countries.

Up to you.

Said this all before so check archives.
