Naew Na reported that the Thai immigration chief was taking no nonsense from law breaking foreigners damaging the image of Thailand and adversely affecting tourism.

The media - a mouthpiece for the activities of immigration in recent months - were present at immigration HQ in Suan Phlu,Bangkok as Lt-Gen Sompong Chingduang announced his get tough message.

Though they didn't say, this appeared to be a PR event.

They quoted Sompong as saying that today was just the start - his policy of ridding Thailand of thieves, pickpockets, those who have entered illegally, over stayers, various other criminals and those on international warrants would continue on and on.

To show that he means what he says 15 people who had overstayed their welcome in Thailand were paraded for the cameras - they comprised 8 Somalis, three Syrians and 4 Chinese.

No details were given by Naew Na about when and where they were picked up.

Naew Na's story said all this was under the direct orders of PM Prayut Chan-ocha, DPM Suwit Wongsuwan, RTP chief Chakthip Chaijinda and his deputy.

Big Oud said he would be going after both Thais and foreigners breaking the law.

The chief's words that this was just the start seemed a little at odds with previous reports that 45,000 people had already been caught on overstay and hundreds of illegals on warrants arrested, notes Thaivisa.

The public were urged to go to Room 507 at Suan Phlu to report wrongdoing or call 1178.

Maybe he should start with the corrupt Thai visa agents who get "back door" extensions for expats who don't have enough funds.

Not a problem there, all the above do deserve to be singled out and dealt with, the problem is that along those tough measures the so called 'good guys' are finding themselves having to endure the shrapnel  of those measures as well...

Too much money involved there, a nice little earner for a quick stamp and looking the other way.

I am all for them catching law breakers and removing them.

I am just uneasy with the Na Neaw ("Vanguard" if anyone was wondering) relationship with Imm, its a little bit too close to manipulation of nationalistic (xenophobic) messages IMHO.

And in the mean time all the other local thieves and murderers and perpetrators of domestic violence are running free or spend just 1 day in jail only to be released....

yup! the offences of Thais are deemed acceptable and minor in most cases. Just a quiet word with the beaters, scammers and road and footpath psychos

The economy is hurting and they need some soft target scapegoats to blame it on...

Can't keep up the charade for long though, as the little people are start to feel the pinch now and will start shouting louder soon.

Small businesses are struggling and the government just doesn't care !!!

Yeah...because they are the real criminals!

Not the drug- kingpins, not the corrupt RTP and Military, cashing in on human - trafficing and prostitution...and...and...and...

Go after foreigners with no sufficient funding and guys who say, that Thailand is to blame for its own problems!

Once again I am happy to see, they got their priorities set right!

Great idea first must be done for the dwindling tourist market who are ripped off by your so called honest Thais and the corruption that infests the whole of Thailand if thats not done you won't have any honest foreigners to worry about.
