It's the revolving door known as the Thai Penal System. There are close to quarter of a million people locked up in Thailand's overcrowded prisons and the only way to keep it barely manageable is early release, non custodial sentences and the annual amnesties.

How do you know that he was released early?

The same 'catch & release' methodology that prevailed when the Pattaya gogo bar bouncer punched out a foreigner resulting in brain damage and death of the foreigner. Initially charged with grievous bodily harm, he was acquitted after the foreigner, who had been repatriated back to the UK for ultimately unsuccessful medical 2treatment, had died.

He was not acquitted after the Briton's death, he was acquitted 10 months before he died.
