Papa considering 2nd-hand KTM Duke 390

Still lacking vented seat cover.

Drove by the seat shop but the old guy wasn't to be seen.

Damn.

if you're happy with your purchase then that's fine Papa....

 

Typically the non service history bikes are finance snatchbacks bought from auctions - and if the owner ain't got enough dough to pay the credit, it's probable he ain't got the dough to look after it properly.... Personally that's not a risk i would want to take.....

 

Would have needed an oil change at 1,000km circa 3 years ago and one at 7,500km - so without proof of servicing - the oil could be 3 years old having done 8,400km - if an old "oil expert" like you, that regularly rattles on about oil quality / makes etc,  is happy with that - Then, so be it.....

 

as i've said before i wouldn't buy without full service history - and the more papers / docs the bike comes with, the better.....

 

When i bought my s/h 390 earlier in the year - i went to the ferrang owner's house, who'd bought it from new and he handed over the original purchase receipt, receipts for accessories fitted, receipts from the main dealer for the 1,000km / 7,500km services, plus the stamped service book..... A proper "pedigree" bike imho - and these docs, plus docs i will keep during my ownership, will stand me in good stead when it's time to bail.....

 

You say you're a "Rebel" - Well, Let's hope you're not a Rebel without a working engine !

Yes this is the worst case scenario,

900km past spec. of 7500.

Previous owner was able to make payments for three years

[So probably did dat 1000km one.]

then didn't for some reason.

Probably bought a car.

The dealer changed oil with 'Castrol',

probably economy mineral oil,

Rode that a few days

but not oil filter or fuel filter 

both were dark,

nor paper air filter which was 50-50;

but all done now;

papa sprang for 1.4 l Amsoil @B500/l..

Amsoil in good for 2x normal milage

so 15K-km from now

will change again, at about 23,500 odo.

Maybe 20,000, nice round number.

papa prolly will be done in before that.

Might ride her to Chiang Rai early January.

Nan is calling.

And is there something called 'old elephant trail'

north Chiang Mai?

maybe papa √ that.

Be careful with some of those sliders.

In one of the RokBagoros videos (sorry I don't remember which one) he says using one of those points to mount the sliders is a bad idea because it makes it more likely that the frame will be damaged in a crash.

There is a lot of discussion about frame sliders in the track day scene ,regarding them breaking the frame and digging in when the bike is sliding down the road making it then flip and cause even more damage,this is more in high speed crashes on the race track.

for low speed crashes and you just simply dropping the bike they definately do offer good protection.

The Duke has a couple of places where these things can be mounted. I.e. at the swing arm. In that video he only pointed out the one mounting point which should be avoided. I think it's near the radiator.

Under further inspection:

1. Rear mount for right side view,

   from axel@ 2 o'clock `50mm out

  Threaded hole ~1cm, for skid

2. @ 4 o'clock from centre is another threaded hole

   to accommodate paddock stand thimble.

3. Behind the radiator, is a Y shaped bracket with 3-bolt mount.

   I think the ones papa ordered bolt to the 2 upper spots.

4. Front wheel:  turns out, no mounting points found there.

We need a proper top speed now, not a so windy day, flat road, and bend down a bit like the racer boys...5555 ????, I reckon 120km/h...!!! 

 

Tacho meter reading and a GPS max reading - you know those speed apps for your mobile, you can start and put the phone in your pocket, afterwards can see your proper GPS Max speed on the app... , I have DigiHUD app but they are many others...

The KTM Duke 390 should do way more than 120kmh - I'm thinking closer to 150-160kmh on a good straight. 

 

EDIT: OK re-reading the thread we may be me talking the Duke 200cc in which case, I agree, 120kmh, only if bent over like the van-van boys !!! ????

In theory the 390 has a top speed of 160km/h. But in real life the wind is pretty bad even at 120km/h. And the Duke is not the kind of bike where you lie flat on the tank. ????

Comparing to my longtime road bike ceeber150:

KTM sits taller,

arms are spread wider,

more comfy,

opens the thorax.

But anti-aero.

Handle-bar width out-to-out:

’08 cbr150r              25”

KTM . Duke200          30

Lifan X-200                 33”

Nouvo125  SX              27.5”

Duke will hit 120 on speedo.

Not much after that.

On ceeber years ago have indicated 150+

with top-box & duffle

on gasohol.

Last year racing a storm & darkness back

to Patts from SaKaew

Whipping all the ponies 130+kphi for a couple of hours.

Would stop at all the lights on 331

then if seeing no fuzz, run them.

No gps & who knows about these speedometers.

But made it back way quicker than the box people.

Sure

But can papa also sense the engine temperature and things like that?

And does papa remember all the details from every second of his ride?

 

Torque All logs everything. If you like you can check in the logs after your trip every single little detail about your GPS position, speed, RPM, temperatures, and much more.

Is it necessary? No. Is it interesting? Yes. And it could also help with possible troubleshooting maybe in the future.

Yes, reducing = 0 presence -  at least this is what it looks like in the moment.

It seems the Thai distributor BurnRubber canceled the KTM contract beginning of this year.

And about a month ago the KTM "Flagship" shop in A-Square was closed.

Since then I contacted BurnRubber per email - no response.

And I contacted head office KTM in Austria - no response until now.

Not good...

Hard to know if KTM cancelled, or Burn Rubber cancelled ....

You are right, I have no information who cancelled.

 

I guess (part of) the problem were the sales numbers. When I bought my Duke 390 in May 2018 I bought a 2017 model (basically the same as the 2018 model). They didn't have any newer bikes. And at the same time it seems like they had at least ten old Dukes, 2016 and maybe earlier, in the showroom. Dead capital.

 

I bought my KTM because I knew I will use it basically 99% in Bangkok and when I bought it they had service here. But if I would have planned going on trips all over Thailand I would certainly not have bought an "exotic" bike from a company which very few mechanics know in Thailand.

 

And on top of that it's all electronic. The 2017 Duke has a ride by wire throttle. A "mechanic" doesn't even have to look at that thing without electronic instruments and knowledge how things are supposed to work.

That is one of he reason why I bought Torque App, the special plug, etc. Now I am able to diagnose the electronic, at least in part, by myself.

Failing to get a mesh seat cover

at the shop on 3rd road,

papa tried the shop on Thepasit

recommended by Properperson.

Mechanic said that they did not have those,

but papa espied an old one hanging on his wall

so he installed that for 100baht, all in.

Slightly thinner version than on the other bikes

but perfectly fine.

Much better now.
