Sanook reported that the US citizen who escaped from a Pattaya court on Monday but who was captured later in the week is "brain dead" in a coma in a Sa Kaeo hospital.

Bart Allen Helmus, 39, is unresponsive on a respirator after shooting himself during his capture by Thai police.

Relatives have been called.

His wife Sirinapha Wisetrit, 30, was operated on and is also on a respirator but is expected to be removed from that.

Sanook reported that she is out of danger.

She reportedly told medics that she is not three months pregnant but had missed her period for several months due to the stress of her incarceration.

She claimed that she was hit by the bullet that her husband aimed at himself in an effort to end his own life.

Earlier reports suggested he had shot her then turned the gun on himself.

Thaivisa notes that the case has been beset with inaccurate reports. Earlier in the week the American was reported as being dead.

Police are mounting a round the clock watch on the couple with shifts changing every few hours.

I think they have been watching too many zombie movies. If the guy is brain dead, he is not going to be getting up and making further escape attempts is he?

Or maybe they are taking extra precautions incase there is an attempt to break him free again? Seems pretty reasonable to me that security would be beefed up, especially considering what happened previously.

Maybe he's not actually 'brain dead'. Maybe he's being guarded closely because he's clearly up for a runner, and even if he is 'brain dead', he would still need guarding incase there was an attempt to break him out by a third party.

I'm thinking the only 'Brain Dead' in this whole saga are the news reporters and so called experts trying to make a name for em selves! Or is it just poor translations we 'Thai illiterate' Farang are being subject too?

True but if he has any money the hospital will keep him going for now.

How very true.

I had a staff member suffer the same fate in Pattaya years ago. The hospital kept her on life support for a few days waiting for her parents to arrive from up-country.

The hospital charged the parents for the extra days naturally.

"The Walking Dead". The story the Thai news tell us is full of surprises. There are so many twists in the meantime that everything seems to be still possible.

This whole charade is an insult to peoples intelligence, the editors of the news outlets should be fired, after so many false reports one would think they should check thoroughly all the reports and where there is confliction at least be a little hesitant in making false headlines.

It will probably turn out the police shot both of them if the truth ever came out...!!!

So nothing has changed!  He was brain dead before he got arrested!????    He must have immigration insurance as required for them to keep him alive?  I guess when it runs out they will pull the plug even at a government hospital since they are allow to charge Farang prices now.????

Ya know, it's not entirely impossible that the brain-dead Yank can still outsmart them rozzers.

Par for the course with most cases, if not all.

Just make sure there is Wi-Fi for the brain-dead rozzers to check their FB, chat on Line and play some games.

Is the suspect brain dead? nothing solid to confirm the suspect is 'braindead',

Maybe the OP itself is where this idea comes from?
