webfact
Medical department warns against drinking alcohol in cold season By The Nation Manus Potaporn Department of Medical Services deputy director general, Dr Manus Potaporn had warned the public to avoid drinking alcohol to keep warm during cold season as it could cause death. He added that there is no truth to the commonly held belief that drinking alcohol warms the body. While actually drinking, the capillaries under the skin will expand and make the body feel hot, but the body then cools down faster, causing hypothermia which can lead to organ failure and death. “When the body is cool for a long time, the blood thickens and the heart has to work harder, causing shock and death,” he said. “In addition, alcohol depresses the central nervous system increasing the risk of falling asleep when the weather is cold and you are not wearing sufficient clothes to keep you warm,” he said. Dr Sarayuth Boonchaipanitwattana, director of Princess Mother National Institute on Drug Abuse Treatment (PMNIDAT) added that people should take care of themselves during the cold season by wearing warm clothes, eating healthy foods especially vegetables and fruits, drinking warm water, taking exercise, and taking warm baths. sencelebi
Cold season? I didn't know it snows in Thailand and you need to keep your body warm.People wearing shorts and tshirts and still sweating for 12 months need to keep their body warm? I think Mr. Director General should advise to use deodorant to the people.

Invariably alcohol is involved, the victim has a skinfull, wanders around outside (often in shorts and no top), lies down for a nap and doesn't wake up. Send those bodies out of Thailand for the autopsy and I would wager the majority of them didn’t die from being cold.

Saint Nick
Actually, I have experienced crispy 8 - 10 degrees in Isan, during New Year! So it gets chilly in some places! But it really needs to be said, that drinking alcohol is generally dangerous? I especially would never drink Lao Khao, no matter what the conditions are! overherebc
Drinking some in cold weather is ok. Drinking until you don't feel the cold anymore is when it starts to get dangerous.
Moonlover
A few years ago we went to an evening wedding function in north east Issan. It was January and a very cold night. Even a roughy toughy falang like me got really cold. I was so glad to get back to my wife's cousin's car for the 2 hour journey back, but it was no relief. It transpired that the car had no heater, so we froze all the way home again. The irony was, that a few days later I borrowed the car to go into town. And I fiddled with the controls and discovered that it DID have a heater. Cousin simply didn't know! I wondered what else she didn't know about her car. St Bernards by the way @RotBenz8888 have never carried brandy. https://www.woot.com/blog/post/the-debunker-did-st-bernards-ever-carry-barrels-of-brandy-around-their-necks
