webfact
Sugarcane breeding gets a push By The Nation Suriya Juangroongruangkit, Industry Minister Industry Minister Suriya Juangroongruangkit is planning to transform the Thailand Sugarcane Breeding Centre (TSBC) into the hub of sugarcane breeding in Southeast Asia with world-class modern technologies and innovations. He said that the government is deeply concerned about the slow development of the sugar industry as sugarcane farmers cannot access and use technologies to reduce their costs and the lack of pedigree sugarcane breeds has a detrimental effect on production, thereby reducing farmers’ income even further. “TSBC will use biotechnology and biomolecules systems such as DNA Finger Print and DNA Maker to reduce the cycle of sugarcane breeding to six to eight years from the current 12 or more,” he said. “Moreover, the centre will develop programs and applications to support the breeder network, as well as a system for collecting and storing sugarcane breeding data.” He added that TSBC has the technology to develop new breeds designed to suit each region and which will yield high-quality products for sugarcane farmers nationwide. “We have appointed the Office of the Cane and Sugar Board (OCSB) to promote modern agriculture by providing knowledge and technologies that are not expensive for farmers,” he added. “This will help increase their income and the sugar industry’s capability to compete in both ASEAN and global markets.” Source: https://www.nationthailand.com/news/30378266 -- © Copyright The Nation Thailand 2019-11-12 Follow Thaivisa on LINE for breaking Thailand news and visa info
