How can they be popular now then, if they are pricier than those elsewhere? People vote with their wallet.

Also, with regards to cheapness, what sort of tourists do you want to come here to Thailand? Backpackers who spend no money? Chinese tourists who spend their money in Chinese owned businesses? Fami!ies? Russians?

Once upon a time, Thailand was popular. Around the 60's and 70's with Americans.....

Times change and we must change with it. Western tourists are shamed by carbon footprint now. Climate change is forefront of many people's minds. Tourism will die soon. No one will be able to travel anywhere soon.

why do you people always denegrate backpackers ?! I was a backpacker once and stayed around thailand for 3 months with 3,000 pounds to spend in 3 months in 2004 when it was 76 bath to the pound . I spent the lot , around 220,000baht . Nearly all spent on street food and beer from mom n pop stores . You know the poor people who get most of their tourist money from backpackers not 5 star hotels and restaurents where some rich hiso gets the money . shame on all the people who for some reason on this forum who think backpackers are scum .I was a coal miner , soldier for 12 yrs , north sea fisherman . I AM NOT SCUM! And furthermore a lot fo them are university students on a gap year and will tour asia for up to a year and spend more money here than most 2 week tourists then go back to high paid jobs like my son did onbly he toured europe for 9 months and now woks aws boss of an it nhs trust company in london . he is not scum !!!

I guess I should check out some of those cheap countries in Europe, before they go

completely bankrupt.  Well Greece is basically that and so is some other countries that

will not say they are even close. Those socialist governments are sure working out

aren't they.  In Mexico you pay lots for a hotel, knowing that the staff

is making peanuts, and the rich hotel owners are the reason for 100 dollars per night.

In Thailand, that is the same, if you pay 2 or 3 hundred for the hotel room, the staff

make very little and the owners get the largest amount.

Just saying..

Geezer

A certain so-called 5* resort in Lipa Noi on Samui pays their farang employees, all management, 6 figures/month, while the few Thais in management get between 30-50K. Everyone else is getting 9K + their share of the service charge. The discrimination is disgusting.

Let's give an example for a low budget. https://www.prijsvrij.nl/vakanties/spanje/mallorca/playa-de-palma/allsun-pil-lari-playa

Mallorca, Spain. Price E 332 a person, you need to book with 2. So total price will be E 664. That is USD 735. For that you get:

Return flight tickets NL - Spain for 2 persons, 8 days, all Inclusive (breakfast, lunch, dinner) unlimited wine, beer and soft drinks included. 4 star hotel by European standards (not fake Thai stars). Big swimming pool, gym, directly at the beach. And Mallorca is nice, clean sea, clean environment, clean air and for sure better than most Thai beach locations.

USD 735 is less than I would pay for a direct flight NL - Thailand for 1 person.

Wow 8 days here, inclusive the flight and all food/drinks...and the best thing is it's not too warm!!

There is a lot of places like that.

I and my gf spent time in Greece and our hotel was 80 Euro a night - 4*, all inclusive food and alcohol until midnight, our room was a two floor duplex with seaview. Very polite and fun staff.

And how was the food there? Was it souvlaki and gyros and so? And the alcohol, was it free headache alcohol or not?

because they are salty, fat, old geezers with no game so they have to pay for fun

Newsflash here, hardly anyone over 40 can score a free one, no matter how much game they have.

King of game, Roosh tossed the towel in last year, when he realised there were no more free ones coming his way.

(not that he ever managed to score better than a 6)

I can afford to pay, and can choose from a selection of 9s and 10s.

You can keep your free fatties and average lookers.

But, can you get what you can in Thailand at that Spanish resort?

LOL. Of course not. Thailand still wins.

it was a full buffet every meal - different kinds of cooked chicken, pork, beef with assorted vegetables, some curries, cheese, cold cuts, and they also mixed on different days stuff popular with Germans, Russians etc

food was obviously not 5* quality, but it was damn good if you consider the overall value

Alcohol - wine was cheap <deleted>, but it was still a real wine not fruit juice with alcohol like in Thailand. Beer was great, and spirits like vodka and gin were good as well.

The hotel had also lots of entertainment for guests - like yoga, or swim classes during the day or dancers, big band, fire shows etc at night. You truly couldn't go to sleep without a big happy smile on your face.

So I can pay large to do yoga, or swim classes, watch dancers, bands or fire shows. LOL, I always thought I could do all that in LOS for a fraction of the price, staying at a nice, but not 4* hotel and get the benefits of Thailand for a bit extra. Perhaps I was wrong. Spain here I come.

Seek and you will find. A few of these unemployed senoritas surely need some pocket money.

In 2014, 57.9% of young people in Spain were unemployed.[3] From 2008 to 2014, workers younger than 35 had an average loss of purchasing power of 25.7%, more than a quarter of their income.[4] In 2012, Spain had the highest rate of long-term youth unemployment (more than 40%) of the countries in the euro zone.[5] At the end of 2016, the rate of unemployment among young people was 42.91%.

Popular Thai Beaches Pricier Than European Resorts: It’s Not Just About the Higher Baht

Raini Hamdi, Skift

It’s easy to blame the baht as the butt of the problem for a decline in European arrivals to Thailand. The issues are wider and deeper than just currency appreciation.

— Raini Hamdi

The cost of a holiday in popular beach resorts in Thailand is now on par with or higher than those in Greece, Italy, Spain, Turkey, and Egypt, which are closer to home for Europeans.

The cost of a five-star resort in Koh Samui, Koh Phangan and Koh Samed has reached around $500 per room per night including American breakfast. This is similar to the cost of a five-star beach resort in Greece, Italy and Spain, and dearer than a comparable property in Turkey or Egypt, which costs $350 a night, according to Diethelm Travel Group.

It is even pricier than a mountain resort in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, which is $450 a room in the summer July/August high season for Europeans.

you can't sell Xmas to Santa Clause, but many still try, only those with plenty of loot will pay these prices, I will stick to the 500 BHT guest house just a few metres back from the beach
