webfact
Ample water assured on southern wildlife reserve By THE NATION Wildlife in Nakhon Ratchasima’s Sakaerat Biosphere Reserve now has an assured source of water for the dry season ahead after more than 100 cement ponds were installed. Officials of the Sakaerat Environmental Research Station built the water ponds because there aren’t enough natural water sources for the abundant number of wild animals on the reserve, said Surachit Waengsothorn, director of the sanctuary. “We have many different kinds of mammals like barking deer, as well as countless insects and reptiles and birds such as the Siamese fireback, a kind of pheasant,” he said. “To help them cope with the dry season and near-drought conditions, we installed the ponds linked by cement pipes running throughout the forest.” Surachit said netting was suspended over the ponds to keep the water free of fallen leaves and metal sheets or wooden planks ringed the ponds so small animals could get at the water. “Rangers have been appointed to make sure the wildlife has sufficient water and can drink safely,” he added.
