Hollywood star Christian Bale's prominent British accent leaves shocked fans ‘mind blown’

'Weird hearing him speak!' Despite being in the movie business since the eighties, Christian Bale's real accent has continued to leave fans shocked and confused

 

He has cemented his a-list status in huge Hollywood blockbusters such as The Machinist, American Psycho and Batman's The Dark Knight series. 

 

But despite being in the movie business since the eighties, Christian Bale's real accent has continued to leave fans shocked and confused. 

 

The star, who was born in Wales and grew up in Surrey, Dorset, and Bournemouth, appeared on BBC Breakfast on Wednesday with Matt Damon, where it was his prominent cockney twang that caught the attention of viewers.  

 

After being born in Pembrokeshire, Christian spent a lot of time relocating around the UK with his parents, and they even lived in Portugal.

A lot of Americans were shocked when they discovered Idris Elba of The Wire had a London accent. 

 

Like Christian Bale, it just means they've done a good job.

There's no end of UK actors playing lead roles in US produced TV and movies. I've been surprised by some of them myself.

Bale doesn't speak with a true cockney accent. He's using a London dialect. Bloody good actor though.

Listening to the linked clip, I would describe the accent as "mockney" not Cockney.

I love quite a few American actors but British are the best by far.

If anyone cares to find out the facts as opposed to this story, it's not a London accent and he had to have a voice coach to do it, so not his own accent.

Seems it doesn't take much to shock people these days- baaaaaa.

Liked the film but did not find the accent that credible to be honest.  In real life did he really sound like a dustman from Southend?

Probably also shocked to find Mary Poppins was written by an Australian.
