The global measles problem

Welcome back to Bangkok and welcome to Thailand to new families and individuals! It’s an exciting time of year. Everyone is getting ready to return to school, to begin university, to get back into their normal work routine. It is an incredible time to meet new people and to reconnect with friends who may have travelled over the summer months or stayed in Bangkok. Socially, this is great. However, from a healthcare perspective, this can really be quite troublesome. Not only are common colds and the flu likely to spread should one individual have them, we have a new problem on the rise around the world >> Measles.

According to Unicef, 98 countries reported an increase in measles cases in 2018. Measles is a highly contagious viral illness, that can prove life threatening. It’s airborne, spread through the tiny droplets exhaled from the nose and mouth when an infected person coughs or sneezes. With just one cough from an infected individual able to infect 9 in 10 people within two hours, you can begin to see how contagious measles really is. An individual can be contagious up to four days before the rash occurs up until around 3-4 days after the rash has been present.

With school children playing together or being in classrooms all day, it’s incredibly easy for airborne bugs to spread. So far, having just enough people vaccinated in a given country has kept it at bay but with more people travelling and in highly-crowded areas (i.e. schools, universities, airports), this may not last too long. And as we have seen, Measles is indeed on the rise again, particularly in countries such as the USA, France, NZ and here in Thailand.

Anyone who has not received two doses of the MMR vaccine is at risk. In children, the vaccination schedule is as simple as two injections of the combined MMR vaccine (Measles-Mumps-Rubella vaccine). The first dose is given at the age of 1 and the second dose between the ages of 4-6 years old. The MMR vaccine is available at the MedConsult Clinic for only 671B.

Measles were nearly eliminated world wide until the anti vax, anti science crowd piped up.

Sure, sometimes there are aberrations and the vaccine doesn't work but that was a very small percentage.

Just remember the years before the Salk vaccine. Lots of iron lungs in use.

Also the Moslem world, with a fatwah being issued in Indonesia, banning the use of measles vaccines.

Even without a fatwah, Moslems in the south of Thailand have been eschewing vaccination, resulting in 1500 cases of Measles and 14 deaths toward the end of last year.

Public healthy authority of Thailand recently launch a campaign to give free measles vaccination to any kids (thai and foreigner alike) age 1-12 years who may have missed measles vaccine in regular vaccine schedule. those who want more information can go to any public hospital/clinic nationwide.

SCARE mongering

when you were young, there were MEASLES parties, so every kid on the block would get it

an IMMUNITY for life, not fake immunity that needs jabs again and again

it is proven if you GET certain childhood diseases, you have less chance of certain cancers (brain tumors) when you get older

big pharma = big scare = big money = big scam = CUSTOMER for life

please a link to the 14 DEATHS

as that is always absent

as if kids don't die from other unrelated things but scare people and millions to get a dangerous vaccine

the MMR vaccine can in some case make a specific enzyme GAD / GAD  65/67 work only half and cause of type 1 diabetes and brain problems as it is used to convert the excitatory glutamate into the calming GABA neurotransmittor

and for people who needs proof & science

It's the very first sentence of the second link I posted.

"Health authorities in Thailand are racing to contain a measles outbreak in the country’s southern provinces, where 14 deaths and more than 1,500 cases have been reported since September [2018]."

And did the pregnant mothers bring their kids to these parties or the young infant brothers and sisters of the kids they wanted to be exposed.  How about the elderly grandparents of the kids?

You're right in that the vast majority of healthy children get over a bout of measles just fine, but there are segments of the population that can die from it.

My father, an only child who was quite bookish, lived on a farm as a child and didn't have many friends, somehow made it to adulthood without catching any of the common childhood diseases.  So, he fought all of them when my brother and I brought them home from school.  He always had very long illnesses with a couple putting him in the hospital and he was in his early 40s.  One left him sterile.  Imagine what it would have been like if he had been 25 years older.
