SANTA CLARITA, Calif. (Reuters) - A 16-year-old student was carrying out a deliberate plan when he shot five teenagers at his California high school then turned the gun on himself, the local sheriff said on Friday, but authorities have no clues about what sparked the bloodshed.

"We did not find any manifesto, any diary that spelled it out," Los Angeles County Sheriff Alex Villanueva said at a briefing.

The gunman, whose identity has not been made public, survived the self-inflicted gunshot wound but was in grave condition in a hospital, Villanueva said. Two of the other five students who were shot in the Thursday morning attack died of their wounds.

Detectives worked through the night to follow up on tips related to the shooting at Saugus High School in Santa Clarita, about 40 miles (65 km) north of Los Angeles. The shooting, which was caught on video, unfolded in 16 seconds, police said.

Arriving at school on his 16th birthday, the suspect pulled a .45 semi-automatic pistol from his backpack in an outdoor courtyard, stood in one place and shot his victims in rapid succession before turning the gun and firing the last bullet into his head.

Villanueva said authorities did not know the origin of the gun used, nor how the shooter got his hands on it.

All Hart District schools in Santa Clarita were closed on Friday, the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff's office said on Twitter, out of respect for the victims and their families.

Two girls aged 14 and 15 were being treated at Providence Holy Cross Medical Center in Mission Hills, California and were listed in good and fair condition, a hospital spokeswoman said early on Friday.

At the Henry Mayo Hospital in Santa Clarita, authorities said a 14-year-old boy was treated and released. Two other students who had been taken there died. A hospital spokesman could not immediately be reached on Friday.

Villanueva identified one of the students killed as Gracie Anne Muehlberger, 15. He said the families of the other student killed and those wounded did not authorise him to release their names.

The scene at Saugus High School was reminiscent of other mass shootings at U.S. schools, including Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, where a former student with an assault rifle killed 17 people on Feb. 14, 2018.

It was the 85th incident of gunfire at a school this year, according to Everytown, a gun control advocacy group.

The USA claim to be leaders of the free world, well they certainly lead the world in gun violence!

This is the 85th time it has happened this year and there is still a month and a half to till the year ends. This will continue to happen as long as access to guns is not addressed. The NRA will continue to ensure it is not addressed. The cowboy mentality will persist!

How about, like the Vegas shooter, he did it because he could?

If a shooter had an explaination like that, I would without beeing an educated professional classify that comment as a part of a very severe mental illnes.

Should have brought a .22 for the last shot.

I included the link above to show there have been half the amount of actual shootings... yes, it’s a lot.  Thinking that limiting the access to legally purchased firearms, (which has not worked), will help, especially in the short term is very short sighted.  That is a long term impact piece of legislation. Very long term, by the way.  This is a deep societal issue that no single piece law, or series of laws, will bring to a quick resolution.

They always sweep the link to anti-depressants and anti-anxiety drugs under the rug.  It is shocking how many of these kids are medicated early on.  Tougher discipline would not have to cost a dime, and would save a lot of money in the long run.  My old Farmers insurance agent is in Santa Clarita...kind, laid back people, and pretty low insurance rates. ALmost the opposite of stuck up, ritzy rat racers.

When people have a hard time figuring things out, it is usually because they do not want to know the answers. Or, the people who know the answers do not want to report them.

I bet pretty much all these kids have one thing in common. Parents too concerned with other stuff to give any attention to their kids. That is not the type of answer Americans like though.

Just to be clear this is not the 85th school shooting this year. That org links all kinds of stuff into its figures and is a partisan gun control org.

Medication is secondary. The real problem is bad parenting I believe.

Even that list is tall. We’re talking about student rampage shooters.

CNN created their own definition of “school shootings” and it even includes BB gun injuries that aren’t even during school hours.

It’s intentionally misleading because everyone thinks of rampage shooters when “school shootings” are mentioned.

The sooner long term solutions are implemented, the sooner they will have an impact... logically short term solutions (some of which are currently being blocked by the republican senate) need to be implemented whilst waiting for the long term ones to kick in.

doing nothing of substance will achieve nothing of substance.

The source (everytown) does not claim 85 incidents involving injury

that there are less injuries is great... but that the potential existed for injury, on 85 occasions, is an issue.

That's interesting, so you reckon that there are many teens in US which use anti-depressants ?

Thanks.

In fact i was wondering if, apart from the easy availability of guns, there could be other reasons for this recurrent madness.

Guns have been readily available for centuries, medicating kids because they like to play tag only started about 25 years ago...Columbine was 1999, I recall.

Right, there may be other factors too, but honestly i never thought about medications.

I wonder if doctors have something to say about that.

It is controversial, and the drug companies have even deeper pockets than the gun companies and the gun lobby.

Not true. This was the 85th schoolshooting, but 'only' the 44th with wounded or killed victims.

As per your link, read the definition.

Apparently the 16 year old shooter has died.

https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/motive-behind-saugus-high-school-high-school-shooting-remains-mystery-n1083461

I read somewhere that his father had died recently and the shooter found his body, that combined with the fact he did the shooting on his birthday might have been some twisted statement he wanted to make ??

I did... an accidental discharge is not in my definition, or a student doing something stupid, like firing a gun into the air... that’s why I posted as I did... things like that are included in school shootIng stats by the named group... even a novice usually hits at least one person in school shootings... It also includes a non-student firing on school grounds... as I said, this is a deep societal issue, and it also goes into the rights of each individual state, as gun laws vary in each of the fifty states, and also in cities or counties within those states... the way statistics are compiled is a big part of the problem, as different group have different criteria for Categories with the same title...
