An elderly couple were shot dead by suspected insurgents as they were riding a motorcycle to their home from a market in Mae Lan district of Thailand’s southern border province of Pattani this evening (Friday).

A two and a half year old toddler, on the same motorbike, was also injured.

The dead couple were identified as 60-year old Anukul Khunkaew and his 55-year old wife, Mrs. Yupin.

These Muslim insurgents just like killing and don't care who or how old they are and need to be put down like the dogs they are .

The best way to get rid of radicalism in a religion is from within.

Other Muslims who feel this is not in their belief to kill other non-Muslims need to step up and either stop these killers themselves or move to live in Muslim countries amongst themselves.

Imagine Thailand doing what Myanmar does and have Buddhists killing Muslims?

There are a lot more Buddhists in Thailand.  How would Muslims feel?

Insurgents as a description should be replaced by Islamic Jihadists, it's more honest

Muslim induced terrorists

Might be interesting to try to find out what the role of the ayatollahs might be and what tourists from Iran are doing in the South.

Most any violence in the South is considered initially by suspected insurgents.

More clarity is needed about motivation of the attack and persons involved.

Unfortunately with the military ISOC controlling security in the South under Prayut's State of Emergency, there's no guarantee of unbias reporting.

The couple killed were Muslim. As indicated in the post above, the ongoing southern conflict is often a cover for settling many grudges and disputes. Whilst the security forces aren't necessarily interested in a scrupulous resolution to any investigation.

The Thai authorities need to learn a thing or two from the "Densus88" anti terror squads in Indonesia.  They know how to stop this kind of madness and are VERY HEAVY HANDED (which is how you need to deal with these scumbags).

You don't sit down and negotiate with murdering terrorists, you don't try to appease them and you don't make ANY deals with them.  You hunt them down and kill them.  That is the only way to deal with them.

You can kill as many southerners as you want, certainly the Thai government aren't shy, but the underlying issue will remain. The Pattani States are ethnically distinct from the rest of Thailand, the people are Malayu. They are a part of Thailand because of an arbitrary border drawing exercise between Britain and the Kingdom of Siam a hundred years ago; done with no consultation or regard to the peoples involved.

I understand but this does not excuse the random and senseless violence so often committed by armed thugs.  Shooting and killing an unarmed elderly couple riding on a motorbike with a small child cannot be excused (regardless of the reasoning).  Ethnicity and a poorly planned border drawing exercise from 100 years ago is a poor excuse for any justification of such acts.

Did I say that it did? Of course there's no justification for random and senseless violence, by armed thugs from either side of the divide. The issue of the south can only be resolved through a negotiated settlement.

Well, as Iranians are Shias and the people here are Sunnis, the role of ayatollahs in the Deep South is exactly zero.

I did not see anywhere in the post indicating the ethnicity/religious belief of the victims but assumed they were Buddhists from their names.

I do agree insurgency is often used as a cover for settling personal disputes and conflicts.

There is a report in another paper that says: "Relatives took the bodies to a local temple for funeral rites, as per the Muslim custom."

the number "88" is taken from the number of Australian fatalities in the 2002 Bali bombing
