BEIJING (Reuters) - A trove of leaked Chinese government documents reveals details of its clampdown on Uighurs and other Muslims in the country's western Xinjiang region under President Xi Jinping, the New York Times reported.

United Nations experts and activists say at least 1 million Uighurs and members of other largely Muslim minority groups have been detained in camps in Xinjiang in a crackdown that has drawn condemnation from the United States and other countries.

The documents, which the newspaper on Saturday said were leaked by "a member of the Chinese political establishment," show how Xi gave a series of internal speeches to officials during and after a 2014 visit to Xinjiang following a stabbing attack by Uighur militants at a train station that killed 31 people.

The report said Xi called for an "all-out 'struggle against terrorism, infiltration, and separatism' using the 'organs of dictatorship,' and showing 'absolutely no mercy'."

The documents show that the Chinese leadership's fears were heightened by terrorist attacks in other countries and the U.S. drawdown of troops from Afghanistan.

It is unclear how the documents totalling 403 pages were gathered and selected, the newspaper said.

Beijing denies any mistreatment of the Uighurs or others in Xinjiang, saying it is providing vocational training to help stamp out Islamic extremism and separatism and teach new skills.

China's Foreign Ministry did not immediately respond to a faxed request for comment from Reuters on Sunday.

The state-run Global Times newspaper said in an editorial on Monday that the report "lacks morality" and accused some in the West of being "eager to see Xinjiang engulfed in extreme violence and chaos".

It said China had taken "decisive measures" in the region to ensure it did not become "another Republic of Chechnya".

The documents show how officials were given talking points to explain to returning university students that their family members had been taken away for training, and how the programme faced pushback from some local officials, the report said.

They also show that the internment camps expanded quickly after Chen Quanguo was appointed in August 2016 as the party boss of the region, the report said. Chen had taken a tough line to quell restiveness against Communist Party rule during his previous posting in Tibet.

I saw a documentary recently on this made by ITV (UK): Undercover: Inside China’’s Digital Gulag

There was a lot of footage showing the enormous amount of video surveillance going on in the area, using state-of-the-art facial recognition to track the population.

The Uighur/Uyghur Muslims in North-west China are being held in concentration camps. There are estimated to be a million people.

Some have escaped to the west, too scared to return to their own country.

Israel's appalling treatment of the Palestinians is not alleged, it's fact, as is China's subjugation of huge elements of its own population.

Only difference is the Palestinians have zero influence in the world whilst China is rapidly becoming the number one superpower so are not held to any meaningful account.

It’s prolific throughout China now-they have point system for each individual, and it will be a lockdown when they introduce their digital currency.

That's no excuse for putting millions of innocent people in Nazi like concentration camps. It never was and never will be.

What is the similarity between Nazi extermination camps and the situation in Xinjiang? How many dead will do for a start, Mr Godwin.

Have a look at videos of Hajj in Saudi Arabia and note the amount of people. It's approximately 2.6m. How is it even possible to house, feed and water that many people on an overnight decision? If you can educate me on the logistics of locking up millions of people in a knee jerk reaction I would be very interested.

You could also check the western reports from the media that were allowed into the 'concentration camps'  but that would bruise your prejudices so no doubt you wont bother.

There is still hope, not all officials and party members in China agree with the mass detention and ethnic cleansing of Uighurs.

The leak "confirms in black and white, in the party's own words, its conscious and systematic extrajudicial mass internment of Muslims in Xinjiang," said James Leibold, an expert on ethnic relations in China and a professor at Melbourne's La Trobe University.

The documents show that "there was resistance on a local level" with local officials who disagreed with the policy facing punishment or being purged, Leibold told AFP.

Additionally, he said, the fact that the documents were leaked is "a significant indicator that there are many inside the party who think this is an unwise policy and wish to hold Xi Jinping and Chen Quanguo accountable."

The documents also shed light on the party's punishment of one official, Wang Yongzhi, who was investigated from 2017 to 2018 for disobeying party orders.

Wang released on his own initiative more than 7,000 people from camps in Xinjiang, and feared that "rounding up so many people would knowingly fan conflict and deepen resentment", according to a confession by Wang leaked to the Times.

Poor guy, getting punished for doing what's right.
