Popular Post Kadilo
12 hours ago, owl sees all said: That's fantastic Kadilo. Brought back memories all right. And you were right about it being highly developed. It was a well stocked lake at one time. The English carp championships were held there in the 1980s. The bit where it disappears into the narrow part, was the 'stalking' area. I caught a few carp but not any 'Viathons'. Never had a carp off the 'beach'; only bream. Aquatels was one of the few places where I could fish and have the young family with me. Lake Meadows at Billericay was another. I used to fish at 'Mollands' in South Ockendon. Also 'Tunnel Cement' in Aveley. The other section was also of interest. Gloucester Park. I used to go there for the swimming competitions. It was a 33 1/3 metre pool - or 36 2/3 yards - can't quite remember. Basildon Swimming Club were based at Gloucester park and they had a very good squad at one time in the 1980s. I never fished at the lake next to the swimming pool, but would wander around chatting to the anglers. Now the old swimming pool is no more. Replaced by a 49 metre one? Couldn't quite manage the extra metre? Tight asses. Back to Aquatels. I'm happy and sad at the same time. Happy that the place is being used, but sad, because - as a fisherman - it's no longer the haunt it once was. Even in the 1990s it was very industrialised (got these pics just this morning; shocked). And in 2020. I have got some pics of Aquatels in the year before, and the year after flooding. I'll dig them out, but probably on my unopenable flash drive. I tried to find out, a few years back, who stocked the lake and with what fish and from where. I'm not 100%, but, think the carp came from Tewin Fish Farm. Aqutels! Never gonna be the same again. The Irons couldn't quite save The Cherries. More's the pity. Just remembered. We - the wife and three young girls - had been to a swimming gala at the Gloucester Park Pool. After the swimming - would be about 10 on a Saturday night, - we went for fish 'n' chips at the chippy close by. I was waiting in my van while the ladies were getting the grub. A Basildon peeler came over to me and said I was behaving suspiciously; and to move the vehicle down the road where he would search it. I replied "no". "In that case sir, I'm going to have to arrest you. Would you take the keys out of the ignition and get out please?" I replied "no" again. Then the girls turned up with the grub, got in the van, and I simply drove off. Apologies for the delay, just had a 10 hour drive from hell. Torrential rain all the way from Essex to Aberdeen. And it’s still hammering down. Typical English/ Scottish summer.! Im glad it bought back some memories. It’s built up massively over the years. A lot of the industrial units are up for sale and can see it getting worse post COVID. I saw the brook/ stream running towards the lake but very overrun with reeds and trash. I’ll have a better look next time. Not sure if Mollands Lane is still going. I heard that it got extremely rat infested as the “Travellers” took over that area and as well as turning it into a trash heap there were also reports of cars getting broken into. Another one for me to investigate in due course. As it’s adjacent to Grangewaters I would also be interested to see what’s happened with that. Lake meadows I know is still there, but not been there for many years so I’ll for that one too on a bike excursion. The swimming pool from memory was deliberately left a metre short as they didnt want it used for National events, only local ones. Basildon still use it as there club pool. They also made a lovely Athletics stadium with a large seating area.
bluesofa
Here in Udon we had heavy rain most of last night. It woke me up three times with the noise on the roof (I'm not Thai!) Any rain to report in your neck of the woods, Owl? I see weather.com reckon about 80% chance of rain looking at the forecast for the next ten days. Hopefully good news for everyone apart from myself - if it's at night and keeps waking me up.

Yes, some rain. Steady for a number of hours. Went to the farm first thing, and it looked much improved, with virtually all the rice field covered. I'm just about to do an Owl Log, so I'll put in some pics. 1

Popular Post owl sees all
Owl Log - 28-07-2020 Rain last night; at last. Not a massive amount but steady for a number of hours. Very welcome. Don't want to have the water rise too much and cover the rice as it will kill the young shoots. So if it rises another inch, the overflow will go into the pond. !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The rain came, and it was more than welcome, but the rain gods done us a favour by holding it off until the spraying had finished. This particular defoliator is fast after 4 hours. So I'm told. I've no idea what is being sprayed on the field. Mrs Owl just goes by what others tell he, and as for me reading what it says on the tin, well,,,,,,,,,. And the result this morning, after two days. That's it for this season. The eucas are growing up fast and will soon be able to look after themselves against the grass and weeds. Hope so. !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Too a snap of the concrete posts in number five pond. What a disaster that was. Built in September/October in 2015, it was gonna be a place to relax, have a coffee and look at the fish. I went back to England in November and stayed until the week after the Brexit Referendum vote (23 June 2016). Tree upright in 2016! Where is the roof Mrs Owl? You were supposed to get a villager to put on a thatched roof. "People too busy. Work farm. Not their style, not want to do." Gutted really. My own fault. Should have sorted it out before I left. The wood gradually became rotten, was dangerous to walk on, and I pulled it all down a while later. PVC still under the shed; waiting. !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Broken window fixed. Didn't take long. Didn't have any glass, so what's the next best thing? Be careful parking the bike Milly. Might not get away with plastic next time. !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Going back a few days. I found the clock that I'd repaired broken on the floor. "How did it fall teerak? It was on a hook, on the wall." "Don't ask me. I not do. Clock bad look." Only one thing for it. Back to the 20 baht shop. These made in Chinese clocks do keep good time, but fall from the wall so easily. No comparison. Much preferred my fixed clock. Mrs Owl happy with new clock. Got a nice cup of Rosy; don't know why! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Pipes back. Can't say all in one piece. But they delivered them to the farm. Put the ladder on the pick-up, and snapped the pipes. Well if the piped were dragged 1000 km, you would expect some damage. The valves are one casualty. Haven't check the rest yet. Might not even bother. !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The ladder had to be brought back to the village. Another hole in the roof. And causing water damage. Found the hole. Way up on the roof. I've asked Milly if she will help me with the ladder. Thumbs up there. It's stopped raining so I'll get to it shortly. Don't know how I'm gonna fix it as yet. Plenty of black plastic board about though. !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Back to school tomorrow. Distance on the week; 385 km. 397 last week; so a slight reduction. Gonna be a lot less on the school journey this week, but have to go to Udon on Saturday to pick up my 90 day, so that will bump up the KLs. Haven't been able to get a pic of the Mekong, that has the hook and float attached, but it can be seen. Just not quick enough with the snapping. Big post this week. Bye y'all. Popular Post owl sees all
Just to finish off today's Owl Log. Went up on the roof this afternoon. Charkie came to help. First pushed the broken bits back. Then found another broken roof section, so decided to use mastic to hold the broken parts in place and to seal along the joints. Got a couple of bamboos to hold the ladder steady, and a short timber to spread the weight of the ladder; and me! And we were up and running. Up and laying down on the job. No problem. Well just a little one. Broke two tiles on the way down. I'll sort them out later. Work by Owl. Encouragement by Charkie. Pics by Mildred. Bye y'all. Popular Post owl sees all
Owl Log - 31-07-2020 Call this the 'monsoon season' rain gods?! What are you doing to us. A splash of rain on Monday night. Nothing since. Terrible! On the upside I snapped the mekong that broke Milly's line a while back. It's towing a bit of line, a float and a load of water plants. Seems to be OK. Taking food as before. It's one of the bigger fish; probably around 1.2 metres long. Saw it again this evening (Friday). (o)(o)(o)(o)(o)(o)(o)(o)(o)(o)(o)(o)(o)(o)(o)(o)(o)(o)(o)(o)(o)(o)(o)(o)(o)(o)(o)(o)(o) Yesterday at the school there was no patrol man, and it was precarious crossing to say the least. This morning I had the camera at the ready and to my delight he was there. So no 'near miss' pics or vid' this week. Next week Mildred starts with a new bus in the mornings. I'm gonna pick her up after classes. So! Armed with the camera I decided to snap away around an area of Bandung that hardly sees people or vehicles. The disused footy ground and the old swimming pool. Mrs Owl informs me that they were abandoned 10 years ago, but I don't think they are that old. The Mrs said there was a corrupting stink, and it's still being sorted out. Ten years of sorting; par for the course that. I'll try to get some more info. Full up with water. But that's the best thing to preserve the pool. Then the football ground. At least they cut the grass. (o)(o)(o)(o)(o)(o)(o)(o)(o)(o)(o)(o)(o)(o)(o)(o)(o)(o)(o)(o)(o)(o)(o)(o)(o)(o)(o)(o)(o) Couldn't help but notice a new sign leading into Ban Dung. Just in case you didn't know the road you were on; here's another one telling you. I pointed the signs out to Mrs Owl this afternoon. She couldn't see any humour there at all. The rear one just wanted a lick of paint. Will the old 'un be taken away? Or, moved 50 metres along the road? (o)(o)(o)(o)(o)(o)(o)(o)(o)(o)(o)(o)(o)(o)(o)(o)(o)(o)(o)(o)(o)(o)(o)(o)(o)(o)(o)(o)(o) The new road that had fell into it's own hole a few months ago is local news once again. This white marking is obviously a warning. "Stay away from hole." Or similar. And there it is! (o)(o)(o)(o)(o)(o)(o)(o)(o)(o)(o)(o)(o)(o)(o)(o)(o)(o)(o)(o)(o)(o)(o)(o)(o)(o)(o)(o)(o) The eucas are looking good, now that the grass has been killed off. (o)(o)(o)(o)(o)(o)(o)(o)(o)(o)(o)(o)(o)(o)(o)(o)(o)(o)(o)(o)(o)(o)(o)(o)(o)(o)(o)(o)(o) The Village Buddha pond is filling up very slowly. They obviously have plans for the place. I'll be watching with interest; as usual. (o)(o)(o)(o)(o)(o)(o)(o)(o)(o)(o)(o)(o)(o)(o)(o)(o)(o)(o)(o)(o)(o)(o)(o)(o)(o)(o)(o)(o) Have four people at the farm working at the mo'. One cutting around the eucas, two on chog-chogs and Pook (Mrs Owl's sister) in charge of the vitamins. Gonna be another tomorrow, as Gum's wife is gonna be pulling out the weeds in the rice farm by hand. Had three people come to the house yesterday looking for work. Mrs Owl wanted to cut the grass around the farm house, but I want to try out my bio-weedkiller. Picked up a sack of raw salt yesterday. Have everything except the 'orange oil, or 'citrus concentrate'. Tried four shops in Ban Dung this afternoon. The Mrs was trying to explain, but she didn't really know what I was on about. So it's back to the Internet. In the past I've sometimes been frustrated that no-one knew of what I was talking about; only to find the item in the corner of some shop a month later. Lost in translation a lot of the time, and the Mrs not being able to grasp what is wanted, on the other occasions. Such was the case with 'threaded rod', 'wood vinegar', 'adjustable wood bit' etc. Now I get a pic on the mobile ready beforehand if I can. I was quite proud of Milly today. They were doing some 'Thai maths' (don't know what is Thai maths except that it's in Thai?), and the teacher asked the class what is 65 multiplied by 75. Everyone grabbed their pencil and paper. Milly said she worked it out in her head, put her hand up straight away and said the answer. The home teaching work was not all wasted after all. A lot of activity as I passed VoA Wednesday morning, on the way back from the school run, just after eight. There were a few, very smart, cars lined up at the gate, and the front one was being searched underneath with the stick and mirror. Something was going on. I think Thai rather than US. The Americans usually arrive in choppers. I just slowed a little to have a butchers. Didn't dare stop to take pics. Being interrogated at home is enough. Thoughts of being locked up underground for a few hours, let out soaking wet; and, getting the camera confiscated. Then have to go home and explain the saga. "Why you stop outside VoA? You look lady there?" At the present time there is a correlation between money spent and work done; makes a change. Not always been like that in times past. Some of our benzine (five litre can) went walkies from the farm store in the week. Gonna keep it under the outside table, at home, for the time being. Just give it out as required. Mrs Owl says I'm too trusting. More to follow. Bye y'all. Edited July 31, 2020 by owl sees all 9

Time to put Milly to work selling underground lottery numbers. Thanks bannork. During the lock-down, we were spending an hour a day on mental arithmetic. And generally getting to understand what numbers actually mean; and how to use them. An example would be an actual case recently. The man that is cutting around the eucas in number one farm, is being paid 1/2 baht a tree. There are just over 9,000 trees. When we (Mrs Owl and I) were working things out, I said "how long to cut one tree, or even better how long to cut 10." Ten minutes for 10 trees. One a minute. 60 x 8 = 480. (say 500). So 9k trees will take 18 days at a cutting rate of 500 a day. The Mrs would have none of that nonsense. "Yoong good worker, he fast, not sit down. I think 10 days." "So faster than one a minute then?" "No! Not so fast one tree. One minute OK. But cut big farm; 10 days." I just had to leave it there. My schooling days were obviously wasted. Dreaming of fishing, footy and looking at Dorothy in the front row of the class. But back to 65 x 75. 70 x 70 minus 5 squared (25). As AlfHuy said (post 1525); 4875. That is so explainable HP. Not sure Mrs Owl knows what a dinosaur is. But I'm all for dinosaurs. Big and strong, Take no nonsense. On the earth for a million years or so. A compliment. I think what's wrong with the Mrs, is that she didn't get a lot of fun when she was little. And there was certainly no humour in her life. Too late for her to catch up now. When I suggest that the face cream is wasted on her (cause she is lovely the way she is}, it's often taken it the wrong way. I've taken the suggestions on board. See how it goes. A little rain at the mo' (19-00). 2
Popular Post owl sees all
Owl Log - 01-08-2020 A new month arrives. And with it comes the rain. At last, a prolonged spell. Started yesterday (Saturday) at about 5 in the afternoon and has not stopped since. Not big rain, but hard enough to stop a game of cricket. The drains were blocked some years ago, so there is always a bit of 'flooding' if there is enough rain. Should get a bike cover. ########################################################## Had a look at my roof repairs just now. Holding up well. ########################################################## The last of the avocados has done me proud. After four months it decided to sprout, and now it's racing away. ########################################################## At the farm yesterday I mixed my bio-week-killer. I didn't manage to get the 'orange oil' or 'citrus concentrate' but I can't wait as the grass and weeds will soon take over. The worst thing about having long grass around the farm house is that you could easily tread on a hiding snake. My friend's wife trod on a cobra a few years back. The snake objected, as they do, and made a real mess of her foot. Took at least two years to get back to normal. But the nasty scar will always be there. So! I split the 20 litres of concoction into two tens, and started spraying. I had to wear my C-19 mask, as it was so strong. The sprayer is one where you pump a lever with one hand to keep the pressure up. No sooner did I do the first batch when it started piddling. And, as I look out side, from the village house, it still raining. So that was a waste of time and resources. Try again when the sun shines. Will not be long for sure; tomorrow or Tuesday. ########################################################## The children have absolutely destroyed the two hammocks. I'm not gonna waste my time repairing them again. The material is old and needs replacing. I'll have a look in the market in Ban Dung or go to the district market on the 4th (Tuesday). n. ########################################################## Have finally redone all the scripts and pics for our (me and Milly) project. All the original details were on the old computer, which blew up. But, not to worry as I had a copy on my flash drive, which cannot be opened. Anyway, we are up and running. A book is planned (all about village life in Thailand, but with numbers replacing people) and a cartoon series, if we can get a backer. Been developing the whole thing for nearly two years. Got some interest from a Korean company. Fingers x'ed. I write the scripts from our joint ideas, and Milly takes care of the illustrations. ########################################################## I'm rooting for Brentwood in the week (sorry TBL). Not been in the English top flight for a long, long time. Fulham had their chance and blew it away, a couple of seasons ago. Come on you Bees! Bye y'all. I can degenerate your hard work instantly: I'm not a number, I'm a Thai man. So I am number six? Are you going for a number two, or perhaps a sixty-nine at the local takeaway?

Brentwood = Centre of TOWIE (the Only Way is Essex) Brentford = Championship Play off Final. I’m with you, come on the Bees!

Be nice what with the new stadium as well, good bit of planning.
