The number of American bases globally is a fact which seems unrelated to China's claims to nearly the entire South China sea. Are you saying that you support the Chinese claim as legitimate? And that other Nation's claims are illigitimate? Do you think that China's position on the matter is correct?

Not at all. What I am saying it's that it's a matter for Taiwan (the biggest claimant by the way), mainland China, Phillipines, Brunei, Vietnam, Indonesia and Malaysia to sort out. That's the process being worked on at the moment, and those countries should be left to it.

China gets the stick for militarising islands but Vietnam leave them standing in that aspect. Rarely do you see that published.

The reference to American bases was a response to the 'Flexing Muscle' part of the debate. As far as world disruption is concerned, China isn't even at the starting gate, and surely we all know the gold medalist there?

Bases are usually by mutual agreement so they are a bit like a vote. The current vote is US 700, China 1 and is not likely to change much until China fixes its stone age views on democracy and democratic principles.

Have you asked the people in Okinawa? Busan? Daegu?

You'll vote for what I tell you if the gun is close enough to your head.

Democracy is failing throughout the world, surely from a cursory study of current affairs that much is obvious?

One small tiny difference: the USA is there on invitation of the country the base is. Not like the Chinese: just take what your navy can get.

See my response to Mr Rabas above.

All those SCS territories are of questionable ownership and each of the countries involved have absorbed some of the islands/shoals/sandbanks under question. Why is it only the Chinese that get slated for doing so? Vietnam has cheerfully militarised 43 islands in the SCS with no reaction from anyone, anywhere, outside the area. China questionably 5. That's ok is it?

It needs to be remembered that it isn't China v The Rest. All these countries have disputes with each other too. Again that never gets published.

I remember when the west last decided to stop China in SEA. 56 thousand dead later they ran away.

Do you or yours want to die to stop them now?

I blame Nixon/ Kissinger for recognising China in the first place.

First of all nobody ran, we marched against it, to halt it

Okinawa, is that Japanese?

Spoken like the Chinese government, guns are for controlling the people.

Do not mistake protest and struggle around the world as a failure of Democracy.  That is Democracy in its purest and most glorious form. Those people have the right to protest granted to them by their own democratic systems. That's what keeps Democracy alive. In the end, Democracy and freedom have the moral authority to win because they represent the force of life itself.  Totalitarian governments are lifeless and it is they who are destined to fail.

Sure is. Have a look at how many American servicemen 'invited' there have been imprisoned for rape. murder, etc, by the grateful people of Okinawa.

But we aren't talking about China, we're talking about American military bases, the common myth is that they are invited but what purpose do they serve? Hasn't the invitation run out yet, or are they there because of duress?

Why do people need to protest if democracy is so perfect? Burn their own cities down, smash stuff up? It's easily available knowledge that there are plenty of street protests in China each and every week, but no-one goes berserk and loses control. Look up the pigs in the river protest. Does anyone actually listen to democratic protestors? No, they don't have to. The minority loses under that process.

Not sure why China keeps saying “IF” Taiwan becomes independent. It already is.

Can you imagine, the Danes wiothd claim the Haisborough SandsHammond's Knoll and Scroby Sands, simply because they were there the first ?

As THIS is, what the Chinese do with all shallow water areas in teh South Chinese Sea.

Come to think of it, what are the Chinese doing thinking about landing on America's Moon or Mars?
