When biometrics won't work! Viet pickpockets slipped in over "natural border"

Unusually for an immigration press conference yesterday, the 2 billion baht biometrics system to keep the blacklisted out of the country was not mentioned.

There was a good reason.

The two Vietnamese pickpockets presented to the press had slipped into Thailand across a natural border and never been stamped into  the kingdom at all.

Immigration chief Lt-Gen Sompong "Big Oud" Chingduang presented the press conference amid a large collection of helpers and vinyl boards.

The press was told that a Japanese man with his family in Chiang Mai for Loy Krathong last week had reported having his wallet lifted.

Muang police and immigration studied CCTV and their investigations led to the arrest at a hotel of Do Dinh, 32 and Ha Van, 39.

They were found in possession of twelve items of evidence.

Both had stolen in Thailand before and been blacklisted. But they sneaked back in without going through any checks.

They were charged with illegal entry and theft and receiving stolen goods and are in the custody of the Muang Chiang Mai police.

A great use of resources in a country where immigration feels foreigners with proper visas should be scrutinized vigorously.

How about you use that manpower for protecting your borders from criminals who can simply walk over? And not waste that manpower on photo-shoots that further highlight your ineptitude that endangers the public's well being and wastes time and money.

For example, on the side of the golden triangle ...
or more simply along the border that is made by the Mekong ...
Nothing is easier to cross this river by boat on the thousands of km that border with Myanmar (a few tens of km) but especially with Laos ...
Criminals do not bother with border points ...

Right now, if you're in the right place you don't even need a boat. The water in the Mekong is so low you could walk across.

A fine assemblage gathered together to announce the capture of two petty Vietnamese villains.

Can you imagine what how big it would be if they caught a real criminal like Red Bull Vorayuth "Boss" Yoovidhya.

What about all that Thai Company that ripped thousands of baht from the Chinese tourists for the dud Loy Krathong/Yi Peng celebrations? Will they be given the same publicity?

Nah, they only have 1,600 generals - they couldn't get them all in the same photo-shoot.

Yes, they need a big beautiful border wall...with spikes and razor wire and crocs...and Myanmar, Cambodia, Laos, and Malaysia will pay for it!

Yeah, and I bet those crocs will be copies too, not the real thing!

Why would you want to stick rather naff plastic sandals - real or fake - on a border wall?
