What is your opinion?

I think that the most strong reason is and will be lack of knowledge how to navigate in life for many guys. I dont think that there is especially much people on Non Immigrant O-A, and those who are, can go and change to a VISA "O" instead.....

That loophole will likely be closed soon.  I would think half of retirees, not married, are on OA and extensions of OA.  Was clearly the easier way starting out.

Health insurance for who?

Those obtaining oa post Oct 31.

Those that obtained prior but still have active oa visa.

Those that some time back entered on O-A and now obtaining extensions on whatever basis.

Or anyone on extensions based on retirement, eg non o folk.

Probably 60% of those who leave because of insufficient funding requirements and 20% due to cost or difficulty in obtaining the required insurance. 20% because they just can't be bothered anymore. That's my opinion from what I understand.

Biggest reason for my pals leaving is death.

One went the PI because no money in bank, now in Phnom Penh.

I originally had a retirement non-o from the UK, no finances, over 50, cost 120 quid for the year.

Don't know anyone that's ever had an O-A.

In my experience and among those I know here, there are hardly anyone on a O-A-VISA.. So obviously it is not that easy to predict that one, is it??

We hope not, we're getting married this week.

 

And by contrast to the post above, I know lots of people here who are retired on O-A's using retirement as the purpose.

1.  For those over 50 told they need it for their extension.

2.  Those obtaining OA past 10-31 would not be already living here.

3.  Those on OA, yes if it is required for them to stay or extend.

4.  O is not affected for the time being.

I think that is an over-estimate, many years ago Non-Imm-O Multiples were the long term preferred choice and that is where my retirement ext started. The question was asked at a club I attend of Expats and only the odd one or 2 were using O-A extensions of 30+ guys.

I can tell you something else. That scenario of "i'm 49 now and I can't wait to hit 50 so that it becomes easier" will be encountered less and less.

 

New "retirees" would have to have serious mental issues, to start from zero under the current regulations.

 

And I voted B, reason: scam.

Right, but if you had ever practically camped out at CM I'll for an extension, you would know many are extending OAs, and quite a few are married to a Thai, but very recently, it was still considered easier to be on OA extension vs marriage extension.  Even though it involved an extra 400k in the bank.

I am looking at 36k per year with Falcon..waiting to hear from them on possible deductibles.  It is 800k coverage.

1. Is incorrect. I'm over 50 on extensions no insurance.

You must be comparatively young.

 

Make sure you look at costs at later ages if you are planning to stay here long.

 

And at up to what age they will guarantee renewal.

For now, you may change your type of visa! ...but the permanent changes in immigration laws are the reason not feeling sure what comes next.

800k will not get you very far in a private Thai hospital in the case of a coronary or stroke or accident.

It does seem to point to everyone over 50, but have they clamped down on it? OA and based on retirement, and the other day someone said ME O was hit up. I think same as you as the grab for insurance money will not be selective in a short time to come. The idiotic other thing is that they want to see the insurance dates match up with the visa or renewal dates and this is going to be virtually impossible to do.

I renew in Nonthaburi, and have every reason to believe I will need to show the policy.

I can imagine how dead the bars will be in Pattaya if the over 50's leave Thailand due to not being able or not wanting to get health insurance. Businesses think it's quiet there now, just wait a few months to a year's time. Business will be at least 50% less for them.

What I find interesting in many of these threads is that people talk about leaving Thailand because this and that is bad.

But it seems many of the people who leave somehow think that in all new destinations all will be better.

Maybe it's easier to get a long term visa or residency in country x y or z. But how about all the rest?

 

How about the language? Would you i.e. move to Cambodia without knowing the language? Sure, it's possible to learn it. But that takes time. And I am sure there are lots of things different over there. Or do you think English is good enough to communicate with the locals?

And similar in other countries. It's easy to say: I will move to somewhere else. But how easy is it to live happy in another country which some of those people who want to move possibly never visited before?

 

I know, Thailand is not perfect. But I am irritated when lots of people seem to thing all will be so much nicer in this new country - which they basically don't know.

 

Or how many of you have detailed knowledge, experience, and possibly contacts in your new destination?
