Pre-Laos Isaan trip advice

Chiang Mai is my home. I need to head to Laos for visa stuff.

 

I'd like to check out Isaan for a week or so.

 

I've been to Udon Thani for a day, years ago, that's all I know really.

 

Just looking for a decent size city, similar to Chiang Mai, not as sleepy as Chiang Rai.

 

Some good night life

 

Some hilly drive spots close by would be cool.

 

Is Udon Thani the spot?

Been living in Issan for many years and Udon Thani I would say has the best falang catered night life in Issan. Khoan Kean is not bad either.

Get there before the dark before the carpets roll up.... last time I was there bar street got quiet @ 23:00
