rooster59
Thailand’s ranking among 20 top marine polluters improves from 6th to 10th place Thailand’s ranking among the 20 biggest international contributors to marine plastic waste has improved by four places from sixth to tenth, thanks to the government’s initiatives and the voluntary efforts of the private sector and the public in cutting back on the use of single-use plastic bags and Styrofoam containers. Mr. Chatuporn Burutpat, permanent secretary for natural resources and environment, said today (Friday) that the improvement shows that everyone’s joint efforts are producing positive results. About 50 members of the private sector, including shopping malls and department stores, have stopped giving out single-use plastic bags, with some turning to paper bags. Campaigns have also been launched to urge shoppers to take their own cloth bags when they go shopping. Cake Monster
From the 6th worst Marine Polluting Nation to the 10th placed, is a very small improvement, but still nothing to be proud of. A greater need to improve still more

Classic Ray
Interesting that there are no European countries (including UK) in top 20 worst offenders. I can remember the Netherlands supermarkets not supplying plastic bags and recycling bottles nearly thirty years ago.
Sonhia
I doubt that. Thai are filthy. Simply look around!!!! Waste is simply transported and dumped within the interiors or the interiors of Islands. Venture off the beaten track as I did earlier this year and without doubt areas not visited by tourists are covered with dumped waste. Out of sight out of mine and the problem remains and grows.. Blow the little trumpet. Cannot loose face! Never judge a book by its All Smiles Paradise cover.

maxcorrigan
I think until the governments worldwide convince the manufacturers of this plastic waste to use a bio-degradable cheap type of plastic (if such a thing exists) it won't stop, it's easy and cheap to produce and therein lies the problem, using paper partly answers this then we would have the problem of de-forestation which would rise rapidly! Going from being the sixth worst polluter to the tenth worst polluter is therefore an improvement.
