If your visa has expired, you have 30 days to leave the UK voluntarily at your own expense before you face a ban on re-entry.

Thailand has the same policy but with 0 days to leave the country. The bounty hunters are looking for you after midnight on the day you're supposed to leave.

Few hundred baht of fines,    I think not .

Few hundred thousands , problem solved ...

Many people are very ignorant of the way the law works, the 500 Baht per day is a maximum fine to be paid when you leave.

If you're detained and sent before a judge then the fine is often (always?) much less in total.

He should have been arrested for wearing that shirt, first and foremost.

I'm not in favor of overstaying, but seriously, if the police has the manpower to show up after five short days, there are either too many of them (police state) or they are not put to good use.

Excellent news for the German press. They will make a mountain out of a molehill.

Bad news for Pattaya and the future of German tourism.

Bert E probably has a network of friends, colleagues and family and I doubt very much that he will be recommending LOS to a single one. Whispering will spread around their networks and thus less tourism.

Vietnam and Cambodia are already calling because these are cheaper and more relaxed than LOS.

Thailand is an amazing, fantastic Kingdom with the most wonderful people but.......????

Let's not forget the upstanding citizen who was stopped at a roadblock with a cache of war weapons and released without charge.  It would seem that a 5 day overstay is a more serious offense than a Fortuner full of illegal weapons in Thailand now.

A checkpoint set up by the Muang Rayong police near Wat Na Ta Khwan found a cache of war weapons and ammunition in the Fortuner.

There were two M16s and one X9 Para 1 - there were five magazines to go with these weapons.

In addition there were 423 5.56mm bullets and seven 9mm bullets.

Namchoke was taken into the police station but soon released without charge

Wow man either you are trying to be funny using a very serious subject of history or you should get out of Thailand now. Hope this was simply a drunken brain freeze comment by you. ????

Hmmm ............ the rules are loud & clear "don't overstay", but this latest news does not help Thailand's Tourism at all, especially when we all know that numbers are considerably down from previous years. I do think people will be worried by this news & rightly so. This certainly highlights the predicament of an overstay for long term retirees, especially those that need assistance with their documentation ......... if you forget to report/renew your stay you could end up in prison ............ not a nice thought for someone in their twilight years & the jails here are really scary. I do think that unless things change for the better retirement here in Thailand will no longer be an attraction ........ sad fact.

Exactly, pi$$ of your girlfriend and she calls 1178 and you are history!

"Naew Na urged the public to continue making calls to the immigration police on 1178."

This seems to indicate someone reported him via 1178.

And in Order to give "Pat on the Head" to the snitch, they have to "Grand Stand" the Event.

For What ?

Gotta get more negative Media attention on the Falang,

gotta show how Thai can be more like China.

I would like to read the review he leaves for the hotel when he's eventually released from the prison system and deported.

Note the swooooooooooooooped!

This poor guy probably missed a flight and figured he's just pay the fine at the airport for a few days overstay. The real loosers here are the thousands of small family owned businesses Thai people relay on for a living. As tourists numbers slump, exports dry up, and the angry birds drive out those nasty ex-pats what will be left for 10s of thousands of Thais who live paycheck to paycheck?

Speaking as an unwelcome expat who has already relocated to Vietnam!

What did they do when they came for you?

Tourism will no longer be an attraction,  not western tourists anyway...the power elite does not like western influence.  Currently Bahrain and Dubai are freerer than Thailand. For anyone with money these are the places to go. They also have excellent night life and P4P scene with girls from all over the world. There are excellent restaurants and street food. The economy travellers who in two decades transformed Banglampoo and the KSR from a poor backwater to a booming wealthy area will stop coming here too. Younger people do not expect to threatened by police for minor drug issues nor do independent travellers expect to be bogged down by bureaucracy nor do they like the over regulation and standardisation of travel destinations. Pattaya ruined by the military,  Bangkok spoiled, the KSR wiped out, the islands terrorized by cops, army, and immigration police, the old mountain treks over regulated.....what's left? An expensive country, miles from nowhere with an over valued currency. With daily stories about the persecution of foreigners all over the internet its no wonder Pattaya and elsewhere are experiencing a downturn.  Very sad.
