The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) plans to turn Silom, Yaowaraj and Khao Sarn roads in Bangkok into walking streets, starting Sunday December 15th, to stimulate domestic tourism and the economy.

Deputy Bangkok Governor Sakonthee Patthiyakul said yesterday that Silom, from Saladaeng intersection to Nararom junction, will be closed to all vehicles from noon to 10pm, starting on December 15th. The closure will then occur every third Sunday of the month until May.

As for the Yaowaraj walking street, in the China Town area, the walking street event will be held from Friday December 13th to Sunday December 15th from 7pm to midnight.

All we are hearing now is domestic tourists.... Are western tourists becoming as rare as the Dido before it became extinct?

A few years back, I used to enjoy Sunday afternoons when they turned Silom into a walking street.  Spent a little time at Lumpini Park, then ambled over to Silom.

Wished they'd do it every weekend evening, but it's probably a PITA for the folks that have need to drive the road.

Sounds like a great plan to me.  Except that it is going to <deleted> off taxis and others that drive it makes total sense.

If it's a sanitised version it may work but I think tourists like the open slather approach.

Will Pattaya's Walking Street be the Model?

Haven't you heard? Walking Street is to get its marching orders as Pattaya seeks to ditch its "sex capital" image and a family-friendly resort.

Sorry, bottom line should read. . .  "and becomes" a family-friendly resort".

Dildos are far from extinct. It's much easier to buy one now in Lower Sukhumvit or Silom as a result of the space created through the removal street food vendors.
