PHUKET: Officials this week were still pursuing legal action over seven workers being crushed to death by a concrete roof that fell on them while they were eating lunch at an illegal worksite last Thursday (Nov 21).

The incident happened shortly before midday at the site of a petrol station being built alongside Thepkrasattri Rd in Srisoonthorn, north of the Heroines Monument.

Wiang Suwanna, Chief of the Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) office in Phuket, confirmed that the roof collapse – of a single-story office building under construction at the site – was the worst workplace safety incident on record in Phuket.

I don't think it was Phuket's worst, I remember the first hi rise built in Patong in the mid 1980's ( referred to as the monstrosity by the locals back then ) and I believe the worker deaths were in the mid twenties, not bad for 27 floors,

I'm even more surprised to find that they have OSH dept office..........................

That was a surprise to me too...  while I’d hope they actually have one, I suspect that the departments true “power” and track record of workplace and worker safety action is probably more on the locking side of the spectrum than otherwise.

And that no-one in authority noticed.

My point exactly, an illegal construction that was allowed to be continually built under the noses of those who supposedly regulate building & infrastructures in their constituency.

This building project was not allowed to go ahead yet the company continued to employ workers to further the sub-standard structure in complete disregard to the local planning committee.

I sincerely hope manslaughter charges are brought against all those who were involved in allowing this tragedy to happen.... and I mean all those not just the construction company boss!

You really don't expect the police to go after those in power who received brown envelopes for allowing this to proceed do you,
