I could have had up to 2.8 % back in the days when I opened up a BB account, but these idiots didn't tell me that I could have had this kind of interest for 3 million baht. Instead, I had only 0.5, or so. All that was needed to open up a joint account with my wife's name on it. I've lost some good money. When I gave a manager 300 K for a fund that promised a good %, the freak used my money and went on the stock market with it. I've only had some strange experiences with BB Sisaket. I think you get 1.5% for 1 year at Bangkok Bank. Maybe 2% for 24 months. Better than the 0.5% in a savings account. 1
torturedsole
Well that was an adventure. I had two tasks to complete in the local Bangkok Branch today, though turned out to be three as my relatively new passport required to be updated in the system. I needed to amend my Thai mobile number for iBanking and also change the Be1st Visa debit for the Mastercard. I actually lost track of the signature count at twenty and still they kept coming, TiT. What I did learn is that changing your mobile number in branch or the ATM doesn't update it to the iBanking app and therefore won't be able to receive OTPs. For it to feed through to the iBanking app is an application to head office for which I'll receive a SMS message in the coming days once it's been updated which wasn't relayed to me when I requested the mobile number to be updated a few months ago. We were actually sat there for a full 45 minutes for all three tasks to be completed as they do like their paperwork. They also stiffed me for 500 baht for the pleasure. Anyway, mission complete.

What branch? Those 3 tasks are supposed to be completely free of charge incl. the new debit card, unless you had to pay the annual fee = 300 baht. I got the new crappy TPN MasterCard for free, and that's what it says on BB's website. I have done time consuming changes in my account earlier with loads of signatures, but always free of charge.

Early this year, the official requirements for a foreigner was passport + wp or passport + retirement Visa. From maybe March-April they don't mention individual foreigners at all. But many branches don't know about the changed requirements. The "official" requirements at SCB for a foreigner are: Passport + wp. Seems like I have meet with the right person ???? You know a lot about this. Very nice. WP means working permit? Maybe that is the reason why farangs choose the Bangkok Bank? That we can have an account even if not live in Thailand yet? Like me for example. I just had the letter from the Swedish embassy and passport and that was it. OK, now that I know what is needed so no idea I look into that before I am retired but then I will change to Kasikorn. Or having both. Thank you very much.

Why Kasikorn Bank suddenly changed their official requirements is a mystery to me. But I got my account there earlier, so I don't really care. Having accounts in 2 different banks with different debit cards makes everything easier. ???? Edited December 2, 2019 by Max69xl

I'm not bothered in the slightest if they did stiff me for the additional 100 or 200 baht as life's too short and I like and respect the tellers in the local branch and want to maintain our longstanding healthy relationship as you never know when it may come in handy in the future. My wife would also be mortified if I started interrogating them over 100 or 200 baht. The main thing for me was mission accomplished and we were on our way.

If they're saying on their website that they will replace your card free of charge when getting the new TPN MasterCard, then it's free. If paying the annual fee or not depends on when you paid the annual fee the last time for the old card. Several branches makes a lot of money charging customers when they're not supposed to. I have had several cards replaced. First when they went from cards with magnetic stripe to chipped cards, and then from 4 digit PIN to 6 digit PIN. Then from the old Visa to the new TPN MasterCard. Every time free at Jomtien branch. The only fees I have paid which was totally ok,was when I lost my card (twice).

And we all know that the word 'official' is the most tenuous and loosely applied word in the Thai language. Go to twenty different branches and will get twenty alternative interpretations. Same same with immigration. My annual Be1st Visa debit card charge would have been taken from my account next month, so wouldn't seek for a pro rata refund as is negligible. I have a tolerance for being stiffed in LOS and today was well within my limits. I'm also a tourist at present and was at the time of opening the account, circa ten years ago, so not going to make waves as could very easily find myself with a closed account and that's not in our best interests. And let's face it, invariably they're not out to rip you off just that they don't understand their own processes and procedures. Smile, be happy and move on.

I just tried it in ATM. So the card is unreliable. So the alternative is to use card from home country? But using that for buys regularly can mean a risk of skimming, but maybe not so high in Thailand? I forgot to ask about fees? If I use the card outside my home area, how much is the fee? How much is the fee if I use in other banks' ATM? Edited December 5, 2019 by thailandsgreat

telcy
I am having problems with my Be1st Mastercard as well. Have the card since June 2019 and it only works at half of the places I am trying to use it. - paying in BigC does not work - paying AIS mobile bill does not work - paying 3BB internet does only work when I choose TPN/UPOP instead of Visa/Mastercard - paying Grab works - paying in restaurants works sometimes I have contacted the support hotline several times but they seem to be unable to fix the problem. 3BB did just refer to Bangkok Bank when I contacted them. Another approach.. I tried the iPay department directly (regarding my 3BB payment declined problem) and they answered: Quote So, the reason seems to be that the Be1st Mastercard runs under the Thai Payment Network. But that does not explain why it does not work in some places at all (BigC, AIS, ...) Edited December 17, 2019 by telcy

phutoie2
I will just tag onto this topic and have a few points about the Mastercard issued by Bangkok Bank. The card we have, its a joint account has TPN on it. Recently used it to purchase Thai health insurance and the cars annual insurance and had no problems. I tried to buy online one of those tv packages you see on FB, the company would accept payment in Thai Baht and did the conversion into US dollars. Problem was on checking out it rejected the Mastercard, or something like card issuer denied payment. I had another go with a UK vpn and the card was accepted, However its a 5 day free trial first and payment is after the 5 days I think!. Finally is there any issues with opening a Thai paypal account and registering that Mastercard. I will answer my own q, just tried to set up paypal account in Thailand, no problem, but will not link the Mastercard, must be a credit card, oh well. Edited May 4, 2020 by phutoie2 error.
