BANGKOK(NNT) - Prime Minister Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha is scheduled to visit Nakhon Pathom and hand out compensation payments for land evictions under the Bang Yai-Kanchanaburi highway project.

Nakhon Pathom Provincial Governor Channa Iamsaeng and officials of Government House, the Department of Highways, the Ministry of Transport and relevant agencies held a meeting earlier, to make preparations for the prime minister’s visit and handover of the compensation payments for eviction of local villagers from land in the capital district, Nakhon Chai Si district and Phutthamonthon district under the Bang Yai-Kanchanaburi highway project.

The Bang Yai-Kanchanaburi highway or Highway No. 81 is designed to link Bangkok’s outlying provinces with the western region, from Kanchanaphisek road or Highway No. 9 to Tha Muang district of Kanchanaburi, covering a distance of 96.4 kilometers.

The highway has four to six lanes, the construction of which has cost about 49.12 billion baht. To date, the project has progressed by only 25%, due to land eviction problems which lasted for three years and affected over 2,500 villagers. On November 12, 2019, the cabinet approved the provison of an additional 12,032 baht in compensation to each of the affected villagers.
