Overstay more than  1 year  –    3 year ban from Thailand

Overstay more than  3 years –   5 year ban from Thailand

Overstay more than  5 years – 10 year ban from Thailand

He wasn't arrested because of overstay. He paid 2000 baht and everybody was happy. No ban what so ever.

I read what you wrote.

 

I gather he was arrested for not paying the bill, not for overstay.  He fixed up the bill with 2000 baht, but police discovered at the time he was a 1 day overstay.

 

So, did police release him after they collected the debt, and do nothing about the overstay?  If so, it shows where their priorities lay.

 

Debt collectors in uniform.   ????

Try your luck... if you are found overstaying by immigration officers "in the wild" before you "surrender" at airport, even for one day or less, they drop you at the immigration prison (which has the same number of stars as the central prison: sleep on the floor in overcrowded hot cell with barely enough room to extend legs and with toilets in the corner, crappy bone soup for meal), waiting for a judgment, then if you cannot pay the fine and buy a very expensive plane ticket at the prison "travel agency", you stay here... (the good side is that you do not need visa anymore) ...

You seem a bit paranoid. Don't believe everything you read online, especially in The Thaiger and even in The Nation. Posters here blows everything out of proportion.

Check your facts before jumping in..... you just listed the ban for someone surrendering. For anyone arrested the minimum is 5 years. Yes I was fear mongering somewhat, but check out the 5th word in the OP headline!

Ok

He lived in Thailand  and paid a 2000 baht fine.

So we are all wrong.

The unpaid bill was just a misunderstanding.  The 1 day overstay, well, that was just a misunderstanding as well.  2000 baht fixed up these misunderstandings.  ????

Unless you don't have the money, then a misunderstand becomes a criminal offense, and you are charged.  Then, the money magically appears.  ????
