webfact Posted December 27, 2019 Share Posted December 27, 2019 Air Force deploys drones in traffic management over holidays The Royal Thai Air Force (RTAF) has deployed a fleet of UAVs (unmanned aerial vehicles), or drones, to provide real-time traffic monitoring of main highways to the Department of Public Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DPDPM) during the New Year holiday period. RTAF commander-in-chief Air Chief Marshal Manat Wongwart said today that the deployments are to help the Transport Ministry and DPDPM manage traffic flow while Thailand’s main highways are clogged with heavy traffic, as New Year revellers return home to the provinces for family celebrations and return to work in Bangkok after the break. In addition to the UAV’s, the RTAF has also set up pit-stops, near their air fields and flying schools, offering free services to motorists and bus passengers. Let's hope it continues, though I personally am doubtful as to the response when they realise that the feeding troughs are to be closed... Watch for the rapid back-pedal. RTP That's only in non-world-leading countries, not Thailand. Thailand routinely lags 30-40 years behind the first world. In Thailand it involves the Air Force "helping" the transport ministry. The police is an executing arm of the interior ministry. There is no need to use expensive Drones for such a trivial task. Smoke from the fires can be seen with the naked Eye from many kilometers away. However, The Eyes have to be open to see. Likely to further confuse the relationship between the military and police/provincial jurisdiction is that the Department of the Interior etc. typically reimburses the military for its support. Several of the Ministries include in their fiscal budgets funds anticipated for reimbursing military support that is not as readily transparent as the Defense Ministry budget itself. The effect is that the Defense budget is understated. There is no reason why civilian traffic management can't have its own drones, albeit probably at much cheaper cost as they don't have to be military-grade standards nor require military operations support.
