The OP might be interested in several ways to get content on a smart TV. I installed Roku and was disappointed in the offering, even using my VPN back to the USA. Now I just download movies and slam them onto a USB memory stick and plug it into the TV. Works beautifully. The TV also is wifi to my router so I can watch YouTube and simply surf the net (I know I'm dating myself). It is also easy to download 3rd party apps and the TV updates it's internal software automatically if you let it. Native apps on the TV allow you to access popular 3rd party streaming services and other apps from play. stores. I'm pleasantly impressed with the capabilities I have with the set, but note that basically using it as a video player does not require network connection. The native USB file viewer is easy to use for all common media formats too. Disconnecting the set from the net serves as a firewall of sorts both against data breaches and excessive indulgence of TV viewing on my part. ????. I have been downloading movies and TV series from torrent sites for years and transferring them onto an external hard drive, and still find this the best solution. You can generally choose the format of the movies a HD rip, HEVC, 1080 etc, and not have to worry about any buffering. The free streaming movies and TV content via the Plex app is a brand new feature and is entirely separate and unrelated to the paid Plex Pass stuff where you do have to pay to use their service to stream your own content. In this case, you're streaming Plex content just like you would from Netflix, except, it's free. I just installed the Plex app on my Android TV, did a quick link function to connect my Android TV to my free Plex log-in credentials, and I'm watching a streaming movie via the Plex app right now... And I have no paid Plex subscription. The new Plex app feature is very similar to what's already available thru other free, ad-supported apps/services like PlutoTV, Xumo, Sony Crackle and others. Except, one difference is, the Plex streaming content is specifically and legally available internationally, and does not have any U.S. geofencing or require the use of any VPN. The VLC player app is a free app that's a better choice to use on Android TV for streaming your own audio-video files that you may have saved on a USB stick, attached USB drive or similar.
