Unless you know him intimately how do you know he's led a good life? His decision to ignore the immigration laws of his adopted country suggest to me otherwise. According to the letter of the law, it is a criminal offence to overstay a visa. I agree, its not a big deal in a case with an 83 year old retired man but the law applies to everyone, not just some. All detainees should be treated humanely and with dignity.
