Obtaining/renewing Thai Passports from Samui

1.
Park your car near Naton post office & take
the 7am Seatran /Seatran bus to Surratthani (THB 150+100 per head-the ferry
is half price for kids
). The bus reaches Surratthani market before 10am.

2.
Find out which of the small sontaews meeting the
bus is heading to the passport office & jump in. This 5 min journey was THB
30 (adult) & THB 20 (child).

3.
(Thai Spouse) Report to the reception
desk for document check & customer number. Go upstairs when your number is
called.

4.
Process all applications (wife & 2 kids
in my case
).

5.
Pay @ upstairs accounting office. The price per
passport was just over THB 1k each.

6.
Passports will be returned by EMS.

7.
Catch a small songtaew to the Seatran office in
Surratthani (this is NOT where you were dropped off). This cost THB 50
for all of us as it was closer. There’s an excellent airconditioned café there.

8.
Depart 1500hrs for 1630 ferry to Samui.

Notes:

a) Both
parents are needed re child passports. Dads can get round this by signing
something @ Samui ampur if they prefer. Don’t forget your passport either way!

cool.pngI
am not sure if the passport application @ the reception desk is available online.
If it is I suggest completing before leaving home.

c) Advisable
to have copies of your children’s non-Thai passports to hand as you’ll be asked
to check spelling on their completed Thai passport applications. This initially
wrong footed me until I remembered I’d photographed them on my smartphoneJ Passports with different spellings may cause probs
when travelling.

d) A
single applicant can complete formalities in 20 mins. We (3 applicants +Dad)
were a little longer because our children are almost identical which caused a
bit of a problem for their softwareJ

I hope this proves useful.

FYI:

Prison Visits-Koh Samui Prison

(The prison is located appx 1000m after the sharp bend in Hua Tannon heading towards Nathon on the right).

- Normal visiting hours are 0900-1200 & 1300-1445hrs on Mon, Wed or Fri except bank holidays.

- Dress sensibly & carry photo ID. Having a Thai speaker to hand is advisable too, even if on the end of a phone.

- Visits are usually restricted to around 20 mins.

- Advisable not to carry foodstuffs etc until visitors are familiar with the system.

- Avoid the first week of the month where possible as it’s usually particularly busy.

Detention Cell Visits-Bophut Police Station

(The holding cells are on the ground floor of the main police station opposite the fire station in Chaweng)

- Visiting hours are 0800-0900, 1200-1300, & 1600-1700hrs daily.

- Dress, ID & Thai speaker as above.

- Food, reading material etc can be passed in after being approved by the duty guard.

The above is for guidance only & is subject to change.

Donating blood at Koh Samui Hospital
Our blood bank located at Emergency Building, 2 nd floor
Services hour :
 08.30 – 15.30 on Monday – Friday, (lunch break 12.00 – 13.00)
08.00 – 11.30 on Saturday – Sunday and public holidays
 Contact Number 077 913 200 Ext. 5010 and 4643

In Thailand Rh negative type of blood is extremely rare. Even in Bangkok, it is not always enough for transfusion. In case of an emergency the required plasma will be delivered to the island by plane. So if you have Rh-negative, and planning some complicated surgery or childbirth on Samui make sure in advance that in case of emergency there are people around who have that particular type of blood.

Negative blood of each group is rare among Asians and is less than 1 % among the whole population, whereas the Caucasoid population in Europe or America - can reach up to 10%. And as Samui is increasing annually the flow of tourists and the number of permanent residents on the island is growing, local hospitals are often lacking of Rh-negative blood. Voluntarily blood donation is only allowed in specially assigned places that are organized from time to time in public areas (hospitals and shopping centers) or in hospitals licensed to receive blood from volunteers. You don't get paid for the voluntary blood donation - these are the laws of Thailand.

On Koh Samui only the Municipal Hospital in Nathon has such license. You can donate blood at any day during the week - from 8-30 to 15-30, on the weekend - from 8-30 to 11-00. However, the hospital does not have conditions for long-term storage of large volumes of blood, so in difficult cases where deficient blood with a negative RH is spent quickly, it is necessary to quickly replenish stocks. And it is not easy to find a blood donor.

Let us recall the common notation of the blood groups that are also used in Thailand:
First negative - "O(I) Rh-"
First positive - "O(I) Rh+"
Second negative - "A(II) Rh-"
Second positive - "A(II) Rh+"
Third negative - "B(III) Rh−"
Third positive - "B(III) Rh+"
Forth negative - "AB(IV) Rh-"
Forth positive - "AB(IV) Rh+".

You can learn your blood type at the hospital before the donation. It is also specified in the military card or can be noted in your passport.
