My earlier thread has been archived, here

So a quick update since Madam has been steel shopping again.

All are 6m nominal lengths, 1.5mm wall thickness, square / rectangular tube (not galvanised).

3" x 11/2"        @  400 Baht

3" x 3"             @  600 Baht

4" x 2"             @  530 Baht

11/2"  x 11/2"  @  280 Baht

6" x 6" x 5mm plates drilled for column bases @ 70 Baht .

** The weird mix of metric and imperial sizes is how it's listed on the invoice.

What is Madam building ??

This time it's a small deck for our above-ground pool. We have family coming in April, so need improved access to the pool for the older ones (the kids go in and out just fine).

She's also looking at enlarging the car port, not sure quite why as (at least to my knowledge) we aren't getting any more vehicles :whistling:

At TaiWasadu:

6 meters for the steel and 2,97m (or 9.75ft) for the aluminium,

Delivery was if I remember right 300thb.

Have to make a construction on the rooftop for extra solar panels, the panels has to float above the panes and pointed roof.

They are now on the lower roof (carport) but at times at day shadows from poles and lines are on the panels.

The construction (colored red in the picture) is then a layer that's on top of the roof (for the alu. rails) and on the side for blinds to keep the wall cool.

It's just our local steel chap 14.029335, 100.534019 we spent about 6k Baht, free delivery (OK the boys took away a lot of papaya for somtam).

I'm sure you have a similar place near you ????

I always try to use the smaller places wherever possible, prices are usually excellent and being specialists they know what's what. Or local electrical place is just out of shot to the right ????

Yes, the nearest one has prices not way under those at TW. Maybe a twenty but not 100 or 200 lower.

3"x3" was 750 there.

But many more others around and not far either just good to know the actual prices at the smaller shops.

Many doesn't have a pricetag, and many use price per KG.

Not have papaya, but enough butterfly peas and they can take the somtum from the table here ????

Ditto for me.  The local supply has fair price and delivers for free.  Beside the steel sheet, the last I bought was 12mm OD square tube, 2mm thick and 6m length.  Got 5 for B525.

Good to mention this, put that on my list too.

A frame construction for plastic drawers.

Need something to put my jars in.

Yesterday I paid B1865 for a 4' X 8' X 3mm sheet of steel.  If that is info for anybody.

I only wanted 1m X 1m X 5mm to use as a worktop for welding projects but it seems the only way to do is buy the sheet and cut yourself.  Now my plan is to have 4' X 1m for the worktop and maybe cut one more to have 6mm but so far 3mm looks like it might be good enough.  I was surprised at how heavy a sheet of 3mm steel is.  Cheers.

I made my welding bench several years ago with a 3mm steel sheet top and have given it a fair bit of abuse and it has stood up beautifully - absolutely plenty thick enough for most folks I would guess.  ????

Good to hear.  I'm thinking of cutting another top same size since I don't know what I would do with the rest of the sheet anyway.  The one I cut already has a bit of a warp so also thinking I can clamp together and maybe take out.  My original plan was to weld the two together but there's no way I could handle the weight of both.  And, my table is not permanent so I will need to tuck the tops away when not being used.  I took up welding on my 70th (about 6 months ago) and my projects are limited mostly to plant holders for my wife's potted plant "garden".  (She maintains about 200 pots of various growth and various veggies.)  So, it's been a lot of learning experience but getting pretty good at it now.  I still don't know how I managed to get right angles without that top though.  Cheers.

The car port is probably for more sitting/cooking space for communal meals, although there may be another shoe to drop.

In the never ending mission to keep my good lady (and her ever increasing family of plants) happy, it's now planter construction time.

More steel from the same place as above:-

11/2"  x 11/2"  @  280 Baht (same as in January)

5" x 5" x 4mm plates drilled for column bases @ 45 Baht.
